Dear And Vinh,
Thank you for being a good brother to me! Growing up, you had been a road model for me. You were a bright, intelligent, creative, helpful, quick and energetic person. You were also a thinker and a planner. You had made many important decisions for me.
1975 a day before the fall of south Vietnam, you and I were fortunate to leave; I remembered standing at the port in Saigon waiting and looking for the rest of our family to come. First barge left with full of people then came the second one…it was about to leave, you made the decision to jump on board.
At the refugee camp in Guam, you spent most of your time going around in search of news about family and hoping to run into relatives or friends. You ran into your godfather family on the day they showed up for a scheduled interview with the US immigration representatives. I remembered how happy and excited you were! By chance, you and I also had a similar scheduled interview on the same day. I remembered US was not our first choice; but then it was! It was interesting to note that our case numbers were accidentally interleaved with your godfather family member case numbers. What a coincident!
You and I were settling down to live with our sponsors in Medford, Oregon. You worked hard to support our living. As a responsible brother you were, you had planned my college path from Ashland Community College to Oregon State University.
After graduating from OSU, I moved to Texas and a year later you came too. You then married to a beautiful young daughter of your godfather family. I did not know you had an eye on her from the beginning. You were determined!
As years went by, we received good news from Orderly Departure Program that our mother, younger sister and older brothers families were approved to immigrate to the US with us. Between you (a bright, intelligent, creative, helpful, quick, energetic person) in Dallas and me in Houston, guessed who they decided to live close by? You of course! Thank you for taking great care of them!
You were a thinker and a planner. You loved to play Chinese chess. Your life chess board was only two third of the way and was looking fine; why did you quit brother?
I am grateful to you and thank you for being part of our lives. We miss you!
Love,
Quang & family
