Peter's obituary
February 18, 1962 – June 25,2019
It is with deep sadness that the family of Pete Hefty, of Puyallup, shares the news of his unexpected passing on June 25, 2019.
Pete was born in Orange, California, to Major Milton T. and Luella V. Hefty. After living briefly in California, Oregon and North Carolina due to his father’s military career, the family settled in the Shoreline area of Seattle where Pete attended Syre elementary and then later Mann Junior High School in Lakewood. The family relocated to Puyallup where Pete graduated from Rogers High School in 1980. He joined the army and served in the capacity of military police officer, during which time he survived a serious auto accident in which he suffered a broken jaw. With grace and calm, he endured a liquid diet for nearly two months while his jaw was wired shut.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, Pete attended Pacific Lutheran University and enrolled in the Air Force ROTC program, graduating in 1988. During this time, he met Vicki Lynn Miller, and they were married on June 25th, 1988. While Pete was stationed at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Washington, he and Vicki demonstrated their generous and loving souls by becoming foster parents. After leaving Spokane and the Air Force, Pete and Vicki settled in Puyallup and continued to provide a safe home and secure environment for foster children until the birth of their first son.
Pete learned and worked in the insurance and mortgage loan business for many years. While keeping his foot in the mortgage business at Bayview Home Loans, he decided to put his numbers skills to work as an educator. He went back to school to obtain his Master of Arts in Education and teaching certificate from Pacific Lutheran University and secured a position as a math teacher at Stahl Junior High School in the Puyallup School District. Pete was known for his ability to help students both understand and enjoy math.
Pete was a devoted and loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Vicki Hefty, and their two sons, Scott (Katie) and Kyle; mother Luella Edwards (Frank); brother Karl Hefty (Elena); sisters Andrea Hefte; Annalise Kaneko; and Kaaren Daugherty (Todd) along with seven nieces and three nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister Kathryn Enselman (Larry) and father Milton Hefty.
A service honoring Pete’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 16th at 11:00 AM at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 4519 112th St E. Tacoma, WA 98446
