Today is February 6, 2025. Perry would’ve been celebrating his 42nd birthday with his family today.

Something I learned from Perry, was to stay positive, no matter what was going on. Even when he was angry, he’d literally wipe his face with his hand in a downward motion, & his expression would soften. He’d usually just say, “Are you serious?” Instead of yelling and cursing, like some people. It was so impressive to see someone control their emotions that way, & I actually picked up the “are you serious” habit. Not a bad habit to have. Thank you, Perry. Happy heavenly birthday, brother.

When I told you about everything that was going on in my life, good or bad, you were always there to encourage me and remind me that everything would be okay. Man, oh man. No words. I simply have no words. I’m still in shock & disbelief that this is real. Perry, I remember like it was yesterday when I waited for you at the airport in Omaha. Your flight was super late & I got tired & dozed off, only to wake up to this male voice saying, “Johnsonnnn! Get up, girl!” I look up to see this tall, young, smiling, heavily dimpled, curly-haired teenager looking down at me. Immediately in my head I thought, “Oh, Lord. This one’s gonna be trouble.” I was your sponsor at Offutt AFB, tasked with getting you set up at your first duty station. I took the job seriously, but you… you were NEVER serious. Always cracking jokes, always roasting me, & always laughing (& dancing… always the crazy dancing). You fit right into the fold with all the different personalities in our shop. I’ll never forget how you gained what appeared to be 50lbs in 2 1/2 years. Everyone thought you were trying to be a bodybuilder or something (which you eventually did, & even coached me for my first competition 🥹). Little did people know, the amount of fried chicken, ribs, mac & cheese, & other comfort foods you ate! 😂 I remember three of us in the office struggling to lift a 130-180lbs 46-man life raft. You said, “Move out the way, y’all, I got it. You then picked up the raft & hoisted it onto your shoulder, then grabbed a 2nd one by the straps, & WALKED with them up to the aircraft loading stairs. We all thought you were Hercules! That was 22 years ago, but I remember like it was yesterday.

We had a huge friend circle that eventually became like family. For the most part, everyone kept in touch with at least a few people from the group, as the Air Force moved us all around the world. Life happened & we all became parents at some point, & still managed to reach out on occasion to check in. By the time I knew you were sick, it was far too late, & you left us within 12 hours of me learning from our brother, Henry that you were fighting for your life in the hospital. 🥺 I pray 🙏🏾 so hard for your wife & your kids. You were taken from them so suddenly, & far too soon. In our last conversation, we talked about our daughters & you told me how you were gonna be when yours became a teenager. I know you were apprehensive! 😂 Still, you were looking forward to it, to life, every part of it. You always had a smile on your face and brought laughter wherever you went. You had such a huge impact on everyone around you, & I know you positively affected countless people during your short time on this earth. Thanksgiving was looming just days away, but sadly, you didn’t make it. You were called home over the weekend. I pray for your mom, & I’m so glad she made it in time to say goodbye before you transitioned. I will always remember you as my “big little brother”, & miss you forever. My condolences to Perry's family. I first met Perry when his family moved next door in Chicago Heights, IL. My mama babysat him for a short while. Later in life, I married his brother Clarence. My children , Zoe, Ava, Ian and I, send our most heartfelt condolences to Perry’s wife and children and all of those that loved him. God speed.
