Perry's obituary
Dr. Perry Scott Binder, age 83, passed peacefully at 4:04am on November 28, 2025, guided into rest by the profound love and presence of his children in his final hours. Born in Chicago, IL, he lived a life powered by oversized generosity, fierce friend loyalty, a passion for adventure, and an unwavering dedication to the field of ophthalmology.
Perry was known for his brilliant mind, compassionate heart, and his drive to excel in everything he pursued. To his family, he was an extraordinary example of determination, ambition, and boldness in action. He taught his children to take hold of the world with both hands — for every reason — and then walk through it at a brisk pace for absolutely no reason at all — a signature Binder tradition that began in airports and never once slowed down.
To everyone who knew him, he made the world better through his deep commitment to advancing vision care, one cornea at a time, and through the loyalty, humor, and intensity he brought into every relationship.
Dr. Binder was internationally recognized for his seminal contributions to vision research. He was among the first surgeons in the world to test and refine early excimer laser technology that would later revolutionize LASIK surgery. Over the course of his career, he authored nearly 1,000 publications and delivered thousands of lectures worldwide. He pioneered procedures that shaped modern ophthalmology, trained physicians across the globe, and served as President of three international societies dedicated to the advancement of vision science. His leadership, intellect, discipline and meticulous dedication left an enduring mark on the field.
Outside of medicine, Perry’s heart belonged to Hailey, Idaho — his true home. He adored the mountains, the tight-knit community and the stillness of the outdoors. Idaho was not simply where he lived; it was where he felt most alive.
His deepest loyalty was reserved for his closest friends — Wade, Dick, Herb, Roger, Dickie B., Dave, and Mike — men he considered brothers. And his circle extended even further, embracing treasured friendships around the world. These friendships, many spanning more than five decades, became the backbone of his life.
Traveling the world, both for work and pleasure, was a major part of Perry's life. Greece always held a special place in his heart, and he returned often to explore the islands, reconnect with dear friends, and document each adventure with his signature attention to detail. Paris was his second favorite place in the world — second only to Idaho — a city he visited over 40 times in his lifetime and spoke of with unmistakable affection.
Above all else, Perry cherished his family. He is survived by his son, Garrett; his daughter, Alyssa; his ex-wife Leslie, his beloved grandson, Luca; his daughter-in-law, Grecia, and his life partner, Angela.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to both the Alzheimer’s Association and/or Eye Care San Diego.
