Peggy Smith Shirley, 80, of Anderson, SC, passed away August 9, 2021 in Augusta, GA with her family by her side.

She was born to the late Charlie and Mildred Smith, November 2, 1940 in Anderson, SC. Peggy graduated from TL Hanna High School in 1958 and received a Nursing Degree from Anderson Memorial Hospital in 1961 and a Masters Degree in Nursing Education from MUSC in 1983. Peggy was a veteran of the Air Force and held the rank of USAF 1st Lieutenant RN. She was an active member of the American Legion Post 14.

While stationed in Spokane, WA, she married the late Melvin James Shirley in 1967 in Idaho and they lived together in Anderson, SC for 40 years. Peggy is survived by two children: Teresa Shirley Culpepper of Anderson; Mary and Robert Shirley Harper of Augusta, Georgia. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Stephen Michael James Culpepper and Capri Celia Culpepper and sister, Debbie Thrift. Peggy was predeceased by her loving husband in 2007; her brother, Roy Smith and her sister, Ann Grogan.
Military Honors will be performed by the Honor Guard at MJ Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetary on Friday August 13, 2021 at 11 am.
