Peggy's obituary
Peggy McLain Smith
July 4, 1940 – March 26, 2026
Peggy McLain Smith, lovingly known to all as “Nanny,” passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on July 4, 1940, Peggy lived a full and blessed life rooted in faith, love, and devotion to her family.
In her earlier years, Peggy worked as a histotechnologist at Presbyterian Hospital, where she faithfully served for many years before retiring. Though she was dedicated to her career, her greatest calling in life was the love and care she gave to her family.
After retirement, Peggy found joy in life’s simple and familiar routines. You could often find her serving “samples” at Costco, on the phone with her sisters for hours, or sitting with the TV turned up to full volume because she couldn’t quite hear it. She was rarely without her electric blanket close by and her phone in hand—though she never quite figured out how to work it. These little things became part of the charm and warmth everyone loved so much about her.
A devoted mother to her son, Rick, Peggy’s life took on a deeper meaning in 1987 when she became “Nanny” with the birth of her granddaughter, Jessica. From that moment forward, she fully embraced the role that would define her life. She poured her heart into Jessica—sharing cherished moments through beach trips, flipping through JCPenney catalogs, and lovingly keeping Jessie out of trouble.
Her love continued to grow as her family did. In 2010, she welcomed her great-grandson Mason, followed by Austin in 2015, and Cash in 2021. Each child was a true blessing to her, and her love multiplied with each one. Her days were filled with joy, laughter, and unwavering devotion to her family.
Peggy is survived by her son, Rick; her granddaughter, Jessica; her great-grandsons, Mason, Austin, and Cash; her brother, Donnie; her sister, Trudy; and a number of nieces and nephews who will carry her memory in their hearts.
She is now reunited in the presence of the Lord with her beloved Buddie “Poppy,” as well as her parents, sisters, and brother. We take comfort in knowing she has been welcomed home and is at peace.
Peggy will be deeply missed, but we rejoice in the promise of eternal life and the assurance that we will see her again. Her legacy of love, faith, and family will live on in all who knew her.
A visitation will be held on April 12, 2026, from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Amazing Grace Baptist Church, 1078 Burnsville Church Road, Polkton, NC 28135, with the funeral service to follow at 2:30 p.m.
