Peggy's obituary

Peggy Jane Lewis, born Peggy Jane Bennett on 28 January 1940 in Hillsboro, Texas, was the daughter of the late Everett Glenn "Pete" Bennett and Eula Marie Garner, and the younger sister of Nancy Marie Tallant. She departed this life on 14 May 2024 at the age of 84. She was happily united in marriage to Gerald Leon Lewis in 1958, and they enjoyed almost 66 years together as husband and wife, over 70 as a couple.

Peggy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as loving and loved aunt , cousin , and friend to many. She is survived by her husband Gerald, son Donald Lee Lewis of Spring, Texas (wife Danette), daughter Debra Jane Clemmer of Abilene, Texas (husband Steve) and daughter Cheryl Marie White of Buda, Texas (husband Bruce). She is also survived by six grandchildren: David Allen Clemmer (wife Stacey) of Abilene, Texas; Bryan Wesley Clemmer of Oklahoma; Andrew Layne "Drew" Lewis of Austin, Texas; Anthony Lee Lewis (wife Jenna) of Spring, Texas; Dr. Benjamin Lewis White MD (wife Krithika) of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Bethany Marie White (husband Lucas) of San Francisco, California. Peggy was also the proud great-grandmother of three: Valen & Suryan White, and Trenton Clemmer. She is also survived by her older sister, Nancy Marie Tallant (husband Glenn) of Abilene, Texas and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

During the early years of her marriage, she was a devoted housewife and mother to her young children. She later worked many years at Merchant's Truck Lines and then at the Abilene Independent School District. She and her husband Gerald, were lifelong members of the First Baptist Church of Abilene. In the years of retirement, she consistently volunteered on the bereavement committee at the church, serving meals to families, in their hours of sorrow. Peggy was a devoted follower of Christ and exemplified a patient, forgiving and humble persona, of being a child of God. She talked every day with her sister Nancy and her daughters. She enjoyed watching Texas Tech football &  baseball and never missed a game. She also enjoyed reading, playing games on her tablet and laughing with friends and family.

As a woman of faith, Peggy wished to have a celebration of the immortality promised to all by Christ. She would love to be remembered with the many funny and silly stories that celebrate what was good and blessed in her life. She lived a long life, filled with goodness, love and humor. Her impact on those she loved is amply demonstrated by the wonderful children she raised to be morally upright, responsible and loving people, in their own right. Many tears have fallen at her passing, but she only is gone from her mortal shell.

After cremation, there will be a Celebration of Life held on 8 June 2024 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Abilene, TX.

The family requests to not send flowers or plants. Those wishing to honor Peggy, please donate to the American Heart Association or West Texas Rehab.
