It is so sad that my sister Paula is no longer with us. Paula and I have been close friends ever since her college days at the University of Illinois when I was in grad school. Over the years we had many good visits and trips, with lots of talking and reminiscing.
I was inspired by Paula’s spirit ever since her diagnosis: She continually strived to keep positive, even when the treatments made her feel ill and put her in the hospital. She was mostly sad that she would have to leave the people she loved. Our fond memories of her will always be with us.

My mother Raghda and myself have heavy hearts for the loss of Paula Shaffer. She was beautiful and amazing person! She was amazing sound board whenever a problem needed a listening ear. We both are thankful for her being in our lives as mom's Foreign Language Learning Specialist and my collegue and friend . Love Always Katrina & Raghda Halasa

I am so much saddened by the heartbreaking news of my beloved boss's. She played an invaluable role in helping me navigate my new life after arriving as a refugee in 2008. More than just a supervisor, she was a true guardian to a lost soul like me. Who grew up without a mother in a refugee camp?
As her employee, I always felt her unwavering support, but what struck me most was her incredible kindness. I recall a particularly challenging time when my wife went into labor, and I was at a loss about how to reach Akron City Summa Hospital. Sensing my distress, she approached me and said, "You can take the day off Gopal" and head to the hospital where your wife and newborn son are waiting for you." she said to me with lots of joy filled with happiness as it happened to her family. Those words nearly brought me to tears, yet I struggled to convey the whirlwind of emotions, joy entwined with anxiety that I felt at that moment.
"Thank you, Ma'am," I managed to say, but my mind was racing with thoughts and worries. Just as I was about to leave, she paused and asked, "Don’t you take the school bus to work with the students?" I confirmed, "Yes, Ma'am." With a warm smile, she asked me, "Akron City is quite close to North High School, so don’t worry. I will drop you there."
I was amazed by her genuinely unforgettable humanity and kindness engraved in my heart; as I drive every time the street she drove me that moment, I will remember her as she is with me. Her above-and-beyond kindness left a lasting mark on me, and I will be forever grateful for her support and guidance during that crucial moment of my life.

I am devastated by these news. Paula was the person who recommended me for Akron Public Schools. She was always kind, helpful and protective. She helped so many teachers and students. She will be terribly missed :( May she rest in peace
