Dear Karen and Paul’s kids, wow I am so sorry to find out this news.  Paul was a great friend and in fact, everything about him was great.  I loved having him as a friend during our graduate schooling, which was an incredible amount of hard work. He slayed it of course I thought about him and Karen many times over the years since I left the Chicago area.  I will always consider Paul an amazing soul and I do pray you feel his blessings every day.  I still can hardly believe that I will never be able to speak with him again on this earthly plane. But I have no doubt he is looking out for us.

Deepest condolences

Paul was such a wonderful mentor to me.  I was his first extern at Memorial Hospital, way back in the day.  He was instrumental in helping grow professionally and personally.  We shared some good laughs together.  I will always  cherish the gifts he gave me and the great person he was.  I will always miss him.

Papa Pauly,

Words can’t quite explain how much we miss you. It’s been a year but I know you’re not far from us. Every time I hear the wind chime I know you’re paying a visit to say hello. You were a father to me in the ways that I needed and you were the best Papa Pauly to the kids. Thank you for your love. You were always there for us— popping over to the house to drop off your woohoo care packages, reminiscing your memories of your childhood, cheering at the kids’ games, having a dinner date, spoiling the kids, sitting at the house with us after we brought a baby home, casino date nights, cooking in the kitchen, sharing your wealth of knowledge, just being a phone call away. You always took care of us and you were always present. It’s been hard learning to navigate life without you. We remember you through the music, through the food we ate together, through the signs of nature, through the memories we cherish and the places we went together, and with God’s love. I pray for the day I get to see your smile, get that bear hug and hear your warm, friendly “hellloo”. But for now, see you soon, macaroon. I love you and I miss you so much.

This is hard for me. To know that such a good friend from my childhood, one who I admired and cherished over the years has passed. Paul and I attended elementary school together, very close in grades and a close friendship. He has such a unique view of the world and a joyful way living it. I extend my condolences to the family.
Paul was a dear colleague of many years and well respected in the Neuropsychology community.  I just learned of his passing and want to send my deepest condolences to his family.
We're all very sorry for your loss, Marcus. Thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.
Dr. Macellari brought comfort and guidance to me as a patient. He was so respectful, offering focused attention followed by a direct, informative approach to diagnosis and treatment. It was a huge relief to work with him and those in his practice because he took what was confusing in my experience and gave me clarity through evidence.  And beyond this, his personality is unforgettable. My heart goes out to all of you who loved him because I can only imagine what a powerful force he must have been in your lives. I don't know what he believed about the nature of reality because I was just a patient who visited his office, but the artwork there alone suggests that he enjoyed and would have been interested in an ancient tradition of prayer. I am a Catholic, so I will pray the Office for the Dead for him tonight as you all are preparing to celebrate his life tomorrow. God's peace to you all, and may the sadness that comes with loss fade away, while joyful memories stay with you always.

Making Grandma Julia's Ravioli

Dear Uncle Paul, my first memory of you was at one of Dad's famous fourth of July celebrations at our little house in Mountlake Terrace, WA. I was about five or so, you were home from college to visit. The next thing I remember is being in your arms, wearing a Notre Dame t-shirt (which I still have)!

Flash forward forty years...you were there for me when I went back to school in mid-life and encouraged me to stay the course. Your help with my neuroplasticity project was immensely appreciated, and I'll never forget the moment we delighted in our shared love of gerontology.

I was just getting to know you as a whole person (not just as my doctor Uncle in Indiana) these past few years or so, and I want you to know, I'm so grateful for all of it--what immense energy and light you had,  damn.

Thank you for being there for me when my dad, your brother Scott, passed. Thank you for teaching me how to make Grandma Julia's ping (for the ravioli), for making the most delicious gravlax bagel sandwich on the planet, for all the Monty Python battle of the wits banter, for making me feel seen, and for swapping music loves across the wires. I'll keep "talking" to you and about you til it's my time to beam up, or as you would quip in there somewhere, "God willin' and the creek don't rise...!" Love you, and much love to your family. Big back-slappin' Italian style hugs, Katie

       Angel From Montgomery

                John Prine (1971)

I am an old woman named after my mother,

My old man is another child that's grown old,

If dreams were lightning, thunder were desire,

This old house would have burnt down a long time ago...

Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery,

Make me a poster of an old rodeo,

Just give me one thing that I can hold on to,

To believe in this living is just a hard way to go...

When I was a young girl well, I had me a cowboy,

He weren't much to look at, just a free rambling man,

But that was a long time and no matter how I try,

The years just flow by like a broken down dam...

Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery,

Make me a poster of an old rodeo

Just give me one thing that I can hold on to,

To believe in this living is just a hard way to go...

There's flies in the kitchen, I can hear 'em there buzzing,

And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today,

How the hell can a person go to work in the morning,

And come home in the evening and have nothing to say...

Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery,

Make me a poster of an old rodeo,

Just give me one thing that I can hold on to,

To believe in this living is just a hard way to go...

I learned from you, I laughed with you, I contemplated with you. You made me and my family so incredibly happy. I am so proud of you. I love you so much Dad.

Dear Macellaris,

In the days and weeks and months and years to come, I know that many people will undoubtedly tell you stories of how your father saved their lives. I am one of those truly fortunate people. To have been able to know his laughter and counsel is a blessing. I am so very sorry and will continue holding you all in my prayers. I will miss him so very much.

May the Angels lead you into Paradise,

May the martyrs receive you at your coming,

and lead you into the holy city, Jerusalem.

May the choir of angels receive you,

And with Lazarus, who was once poor,

May you have everlasting rest.
