Paul's obituary

LCDR Paul Walter Kendra, Jr., USNR, age 81, died peacefully on May 16, 2020, in his Alpharetta, Georgia home. Paul is survived by his four children, Kimberly York, of Bluffton, SC; Krista Mullen, of Roswell, GA, Kevin Kendra of Wilton, CT, and Kenneth Kendra of Siler City, NC; his two brothers, Robert Kendra, of Naples, FL and John Kendra of Stow, MA; and six grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Janice (Moran) Kendra; his father, Paul Kendra, and his mother Eva (Gudzinowicz) Kendra.

Paul was born on November 26, 1938 in Fitchburg, MA. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and joined the Navy as a commissioned officer. He was stationed in California and the Phillippines while serving at sea in the early stages of the Vietnam War. He was subsequently moved into naval intelligence at the National Security Agency where he was honorably discharged from active duty. He remained at the NSA as a civilian before accepting a position as an engineer with General Electric’s aerospace division working on the F/A-18 project in Binghamton, NY. He would later accept a position with Lockheed-Martin in Marietta, GA in 1992 to begin working on the F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter project where he remained until retirement living in Acworth, GA. He began to suffer from early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease and moved to live the remainder of his life in assisted living in Alpharetta, GA.

Paul was a great family man and a loving father. He was an active man who was deeply involved in many activities for the majority of his life. He enjoyed coaching youth soccer, volunteering for the Boy Scouts Venturing Program, and was an active member of both the Catholic church and Knights of Columbus. Through his extensive efforts with the Boy Scouts, a new Aquatic Center was dedicated in his honor at Camp Sidney Dew in Rome, GA. He had numerous hobbies, including model airplanes, jigsaw puzzles, and spent most of his retirement days building a 22’ wooden runabout boat from scratch. His family and friends will always remember him as a selfless, loyal, and intelligent person. Whenever and wherever he was needed, you could count on Paul being there.

A funeral is scheduled for 10 A.M. on Thursday May 21, 2020, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Monsignor Daniel Stack will officiate the service. Due to the current restrictions in place because of Covid-19, the service will be open only to immediately family. The service will be streamed live and can be viewed at TribuCast (https://client.tribucast.com/…) In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org) in his honor.
