Paul's obituary

Paul Douglas Iwasaki was born to Arthur and Teruko (Teri) Iwasaki on October 21st, 1954, in Hillsboro, Oregon. Being born into the Iwasaki family meant that he was raised with love in a big, boisterous group where cousins were almost akin to siblings, as everyone was raised around the Iwasaki Nursery, lovingly known as “the farm”. In the 1970s, Paul dropped out of college to help his father start Tanasacres Nursery. Paul spent his life surrounded by nature, whether by his choosing or by nature of his job. Through his sister Christi, and by virtue of a coin toss with his brother Bobby to determine who got to ask her out on a date, he met Kaoru Shoda, whom he married in 1981. Before the marriage ended in 1993, Paul proudly welcomed his two daughters Jacqueline in 1983 and Katrina in 1988. After that, Paul found a parcel of land in rural Wilsonville that was to be his dream. While he and his daughters called his home his “tin Twinkie in the deep, dark, scary woods,” it was all the simple bachelor needed. He left Tanasacres in the early 2000s to work on his own property, Riverview Greenhouses. The 12 acres would see Paul build greenhouses, put up a fenced-in garden, and a little orchard of fruits as he worked towards a CSA program for friends and neighbors. His personal property took a back-seat as he helped consult at Hines nursery and worked with the West Linn-Wilsonville School District and their CREST (Center for Research in Environmental Studies and Technology) program. He loved horticulture and was always quietly proud to share his vast knowledge with those who could benefit. Though the deer ended up reaping the majority of the benefits of his labor, he was always proud of what he had built on his property. This beloved land also ended up providing a lot of love and companionship, as he would see some poor hungry stray/abandoned/runaway animal in need that he would feed, befriend, and shelter, which is how he got nine of his cats. But that was Paul, he might tsk, shake his head, and seem curmudgeonly, but he had a heart of gold and could never turn away anyone who was hurting or needed help. 10 foot tall Paul-Paul helped friends, family, animals, often with a grumble, sometimes on his own timeline, but he knew to be there when it mattered. After a health scare in 2008 he made the difficult decision to get help and chose sobriety on November 10, 2008. He dedicated himself towards not only his own recovery, but helping others as well. He was active in the alcohol recovery community and was proud of every milestone. In 2023, he started working towards building his dream home and realizing his property’s future and legacy, which he sadly never got to see realized. While working on his property to prepare for the delivery of construction materials, he died suddenly on February 25th, 2025. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Teruko. He is succeeded by his brother Bobby, his sisters Stephanie, Christi, and Leslie, his daughters Jacqueline and Katrina, as well as countless cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who all deeply love and terribly miss him.
