*Augustus's obituary

In loving memory of Augustus Bishop, born on November 29, 1874, in Havre de Grace, Maryland, and departed from this world on August 8, 1950, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Augustus, affectionately known as Gus, began his journey in the embrace of Mae Ellis, later raised by his devoted grandparents, Isaac and Rachel Scott Bishop of Harford County. His early years were marked by the warmth of Havre de Grace, where on June 2, 1880, he found a home with his grandparents, Isaac, a skilled house carpenter, and Rachel.

Educated at The Anderson Institute, Augustus's path led him to Philadelphia, listed as a laborer in the 1890 city directory on 633 Hermitage St. However, it was in Havre de Grace that he found love, marrying Celesta Durbin on December 14, 1898. Their union blessed them with 15 children.

A witness to history, Augustus was a stalwart member of St James A.M.E. Church, actively contributing as a steward and secretary. As World War I unfolded, he moved his family to Philadelphia, working as a baggage man for the Pennsylvania Railroad until his retirement.

A proud Philadelphian, Augustus was listed on the 1920 census as a railroad clerk. In 1930, after Celesta's passing, he remarried Lelia Jordan-Harris and continued to raise a loving family. His dedication extended beyond family, serving the community through his affiliations with Kaighn Baptist Church, Pride of Camden Lodge #83 Elks, and Chesapeake Lodge #48 FAM 32 degree Mason.

At 72, Augustus retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad Co., leaving a legacy of hard work and commitment. His final chapter unfolded in Camden, New Jersey, where he peacefully departed this life on August 8, 1950, while attending a Freemason convention in Atlantic City.

Augustus Bishop's life was one of resilience, love, and service, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory be a source of inspiration and comfort to all who mourn his passing.
