Paul's obituary

My sweet husband passed away on October 5, 2023, after battling Lewy Body Dementia for over a year. He was still enjoying life up until a month before he passed, when we took our last trip together to visit dear friends in Grayling, Michigan.

He passed away peacefully in hospice after a brief stay. We are so grateful that he is free from the confusion and physical debilitation that struck him so suddenly in recent weeks and that he received the kindness and professional care offered by Beaumont Hospice.

Paul was 78, born January 12, 1945 to John and Mary Hazel Pierce of Nelsonville, Ohio.  The family moved to Lima, Ohio, and he graduated from Lima High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army.  He served as a cook in Germany and  France and received an honorable discharge.  His cooking skills were very much appreciated during our marriage.

He had another life before me and has three sons: Shenon, Bryon and Jason Pierce. With them he had grandchildren Jackson and Ethan (Shenon and Christine); Morgan, Miranda, Meredith and Caleb (Bryon and Melody); and Julia Pierce (Jason and Heather).

Great grandchildren Lincoln Crain (Morgan Pierce Crain and Andrew), Emmanuel and Xavier Casado (Miranda Pierce Casado and Pablo Casado); Evelyn Kahl (Jackson Kahl).

He was stepfather to my three boys, John McQueary, Jason McQueary and Aaron McQueary (deceased) and grandfather to Zachary and Evan McQueary (John and Sarah); Rayne McQueary (Jason); Gavin Bechtell (Aaron) and Gage Altrock (Aaron).

We had 32 wonderful years together, and while my heart is aching, the memory of that makes me smile. He loved God, family, country, friends, his dogs and me.  It was pretty much love at first sight for him, at least, and he proposed on our third date. We were married 8 months later. I am so thankful for the time we shared and believe that God brought us together.

Thank you to my many family, friends and neighbors who have reached out to me with sympathy and love.

I would welcome any stories friends and family may want to share. He had a great sense of humor and could be considered a smart aleck. Last one, in the hospital to the Chaplain…”They shouldn’t call this meat!”

A Celebration of Life was held at Bethesda Christian Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and Pastor Patrick Visger officiated.

Paul is soaring with the eagles now.  We both know where he is and where I will be when we are together again. In the meantime, I have many memories to keep me company.

“Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.”

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL.
