Patty's obituary

Patty Wheeler 1929-2022

Patty Wheeler (93), shared her last day with her children on Memorial Day 2022.

Patty was raised and spent her early years in Comanche, Oklahoma, Winslow, Arizona and Albuquerque, New Mexico. She moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1966 saying she would never leave. Santa Fe was her home.

Patty’s interests were vast, she had an insatiable curiosity about history and all things Nature (animals, birds, flowers, landscapes). She was an avid reader with an encyclopedic knowledge of southwest history. Her first taste of adventure as a young girl was riding in the saddle with her grandfather to take cattle to market in Oklahoma, leading to her interest and knowledge of rodeo competitions, and all things found in the National Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma.

In Santa Fe, Patty may be best known for her ever growing network of friends. She was always meeting new and wonderful friends in every decade of her life. Patty was also known for the variety of jobs she held. Seamstress at the Birdwatcher Clothing Shop on Canyon Road; long time Southwest Distributing company employee; part time hostess and bartender at PC’s restaurant. She officially retired from daily work at age 75. Patty was a league bowler, avid “yard-saler”, gardener, cook and seamstress for her grand-daughters, oldest great grand-daughter and grand dog babies. She was a collector of southwest and Native American art and anything Mickey Mouse.

She will be remembered as a loving parent, grandparent and great-grandparent. She was ready to drop everything for a spontaneous family field trip whether it be to the store, a yard sale, fall day trip to look at aspens, or the balloons during balloon festival. And for longer trips, she was willing to bring everything as her luggage reached the very limit of allowed airline luggage.

Patty will be remembered as a loyal friend to many people of all ages and backgrounds. Her joke telling, as well as, being an entertaining storyteller will not be forgotten. Each of you were important to her in many unspoken ways.

When you share a photo of interesting clouds, sunsets, sunrises, flowers or cute dogs and cats you will be sharing a few of Patty’s favorite things.

Patty is pre-deceased by her parents Les and Sue Crain, beloved grandmother Ida Patty, numerous aunts and uncles. She is survived by children Nancy (Rick) Nelson, Sharon (Antonio) Apodaca, Jeff Wheeler. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew her as Nonnie; grandchildren Gio Anna Lisa Apodaca, Phillip Nelson (Dr. Emily Hyle), Maya Apodaca (Cody Westbrook); great-grandchildren Novena Vallone, Eleanor Nelson, Phoebe Nelson; four grand dog babies; beloved cousin Beverly Mayes and family. Reading and food security were near and dear to Patty. If you wish to make a donation in honor of Patty Wheeler please donate to The Food Depot, she would have been honored for your help to support food security programs for families, children and pets in Santa Fe. To donate by check, please make payable to The Food Depot and mail to: 1222 A Siler Road, Santa Fe, NM 87507
