Patrick's obituary

It is with profound sadness and heartfelt gratitude that we announce the passing of our father, Patrick Hale McCall, on August 3rd. Born on March 17, 1961, in Middletown, Connecticut, to Warren Kramer and Marlene (Feilding) McCall, Pat was the youngest of four brothers—Mac, Michael, and Craig. His journey through life was as unique and spirited as he was, marked by his incredible intellect, adventurous spirit, and love for his family.

Pat's childhood was filled with memories of fishing for lobsters and rebuilding Volkswagens with his brothers. His academic journey took him from Goodwin Elementary School and Old Saybrook Middle School to the prestigious Hammonasset College Preparatory School, which catered to exceptionally gifted students. As a young man, he found joy in horseback riding and showcased his musical talents as a drummer in several renowned fife and drum corps on the East Coast.

In 1983 Pat Married his wife, and lifetime love, Mary Elizabeth (Murphy) McCall in a white tuxedo with tails, and hair down to his shoulders. They lived in California, Connecticut, Arizona, and made their final move when they ran away to the beaches of South Texas and made a sleepy fishing town called Port Aransas their home in 1989. Patrick spent from 1989 to 2024 living the island life- enjoying fishing, captaining boats, ice cold beers, and just cold enough beers. From two crazy lovers who ran off to the Texas coast came six children, two son-in-laws, two daughter-in-laws, and fifteen grandchildren. Pat was known for being so very proud of he and Mary's children- John , Siobhan, Warren, Christopher, Kelley, and Rebeccah; who they raised in old Port Aransas- six kids who had the luxury of enjoying barefoot summers, small town living, Port A Days, First Baptist Church, and the love of "it takes a village"; a gift that very few people have had the luxury of offering their children. In fact, their last two daughters Kelley and Rebeccah are two of a slim few who can claim to have truly been born on and raised in Port Aransas Texas. All six of their children attended and graduated Port Aransas ISD. Pat enjoyed 26 summers on the east coast, 1 on the west coast, and his final 36 summers of sunshine, toes in the sand, and days when the tarpon always ran in Port Aransas; before the roads were paved, and when you could send the kids to the Ice Box to grab a pack of cigarettes with a note from their parents. He shopped the Clanton's Texaco, and the Super S before it changed hands and became Yankee & Betty's. He enjoyed a whole lot of drinks at the White Marlin, the Sail Club, and the original Shorty’s. Pat and Mary raised their kids in long summer days and quiet summer nights, sent them to a small-town school filled with love, and never locked their doors. Pat was a character to say the least. He knew everyone in town, and a lot of four letter words- none of them hateful or mean spirited. Pat accepted everyone just as they were, and never hesitated to offer a helping hand. His neck wasn't red by birth, but man did he earn it spending long days fishing and working in the Texas sun! He could fix any motor, find any fish, and rise and fall with the tide. Many friends found refuge on the couches of Pat and Mary's home, and their table was always surrounded by island kids, rarely only their six. You could always count on them for a cold drink and a hot meal. Pat was a fisherman inshore, offshore, bay, docks, and surf. He was once a winner of the Big Bad and Ugly shark tournament, and the proud owner of a Hayden Abel original fish print of a record winning alligator gar and a wicked cool lancetfish that he caught of the Polly Anna with John and Molly Nixon. He could cast a net in a perfect circle when the mullet ran, and even when they didn't. He sported a once thick, and later much thinner, ponytail- well beyond the days when it was fashionable- not that he would have cared. He only learned lessons the hard way, and rarely erred on the side of caution the first go round. He survived not one, but six bouts with "Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis" and lived to tell the tale (an inside joke amongst his kids). Pat lost the love of his life, and a great part of himself when Mary passed. He wasn't an outright religious man, but he spoke often of how he looked forward to joining his bride again someday. On August 3rd he got his wish. Pat will meet his Wife Mary, Mother Marlene, Father Warren, Brother Craig, and Daughter Kelley in the great beyond. He is survived by his Step-Father Arturo Ferguson, and Brothers Mac (Linda) McCall of Connecticut, and brother Michael (Debbie) McCall of Wimberly Tx, Brother in Law Sean Murphy (Padre Island) and his son John (Sarah) McCall of Victoria TX, Siobhan (Monty) Allen of Padre Island, Son Warren McCall of Port Aransas TX, son Christopher (Amanda) McCall of Padre Island, and youngest daughter Rebeccah (Travis) Harr of San Diego California. Pat and Mary had a whopping 15 grandchildren: Riley, John Jr, Parker, Mathew, Hannah, Kennedy, Amris, Kaine, Ryan, Landon, Bennett, Henry, Michael, Leah, and Jacob. Pat was infamously sarcastic, and wildly intelligent- traits that hopefully his children and grandchildren will embody for many generations to come. He was never a man of material things, or small concerns. He simply lived his life, day by day, and enjoyed until the end- the essence of what Port Aransas represented in 1989 when he made it his home, a sleepy little drinking town with a fishing problem.

We invite you to join his family, children, island friends, and extended "family" on September 21st at 11 am, for an oceanside service at Port Aransas Beach marker 23 as we send him off with a toast to join his wife and daughter on the 4th coast beyond the last sandbar- where the fish always bite and the drinks are ice cold. In lieu of flowers or tears his children ask that you make a donation to the Port Aransas Animal Shelter who provided incredible care to his beloved Primo and late Bailey and Tinker, or to the Port Aransas EMS who provided incredible service to Pat and his beloved Mary throughout their lives. We thank you all for your love, support, and outpouring of memories.

Cheers Pat!
