Patrick's obituary
Patrick Andrew Carney passed away at home peacefully August 8, 2021 after a brief battle with cancer. He was the 4th child of 11 children born to Thomas and Leanora Carney. Patrick was raised in a busy, but loving family built on strong Catholic values. His father served as a civil engineer at Luke Air Force Base while his mother managed the home and the affairs of their children. Patrick fondly remembered spending family vacations at Fort Tuthill where he and the other children socialized and climbed the 1911 Baldwin steam locomotive Consolidation #25. His siblings fondly remembered when he and their older brother, Tom, would continuously throw them over a bench and into the pool. Another memory, demonstrated Patrick's ingenuity as his friends and him attempted to craft a submarine out of an old washer. As his friend Jerry climbed in, they pushed off the failed craft into the pool before having to rush in to rescue him.
Patrick patriotically and proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Coast Guard from 1968-1972. To his surprise his cousin, Steve, enlisted around the same time and was given the pleasure of toppling his barracks while they were in boot camp on Governor Island. He often, with pride reminisced about his days as a Radioman and specializing in his ship's communication technology. Throughout his military career he traveled on the Pontchartrain with 142 other souls to Vietnam, Japan, Alaska and Honolulu.
After leaving the military, Patrick met his wife Meg while working at Fry's Food as a produce manager. He would prepare foods in the back and occasionally sneak glimpses of her through the double doors as she took her breaks. Eventually he mustard the courage to ask her on a date after blocking the doorway. She wasn't sure what to think, but took a chance and within two months they married on September 14, 1973. They remained together through all life's many challenges for over 47 years. He lovingly adopted her first born son, Tom on his 3rd birthday. In 1975 they welcomed a son Andy and in 1978 a daughter Andrea. His kids fondly remember Flagstaff Pow Wow's, camping, practicing their 2nd Amendment and riding a helicopter in the Grand Canyon. Patrick enjoyed sharing his love of music and theater with his kids and a past time joyfully passed down to the next generation.
Throughout life's many challenges, he never became distracted nor gave up on his family. Often, he read and referred to his bible for guidance and self-confidence to get him through all the trials life dealt. He was a strong believer in kindness, generosity and faithfulness in Christ. He loved writing short stories, song lyrics and poetry during his downtime. He was an incredible listener, with a kind soft temperament and never judgmental. He loved his animals, including the homing pigeons he raised as an adolescent. The later days of his life where spent snuggled up with his dog's either in his recliner or all snuggled up in bed.
He is dearly missed by his wife, children, siblings, 10 grandchildren and 4 great grand children.
We celebrate the life he loved and have peace knowing he has reunited with those who have gone before him.
