Pat's obituary
Wilma Patricia “Pat” Bauer Baker Southwick Hurlbut
and Wayne L. Hurlbut
LOUISVILLE, KY – Wayne L. Hurlbut passed away on January 8, 2026, and was joined in eternal rest just four days later by his beloved wife of over 38 years, Wilma Patricia “Pat” Hurlbut, who passed away on January 12, 2026. After a lifetime of adventures together, they remained side-by-side until the very end.
The Life of Pat Hurlbut Pat was born on January 28, 1941, in Rapid City, SD, to Christian and Martha Bauer. While she was affectionately called "Patty" by her family as a child, she was known throughout her adult life as Pat. A 1959 graduate of Rapid City High School, she later earned her degree from the National College of Business.
Pat was a woman of restless spirit and a love for change, moving every few years to begin a new chapter across South Dakota, Idaho, North Dakota, Arizona, and finally Kentucky. No matter where she was, she lived a life of service, spending nearly twenty years working with Veterans at the VA Hospital and serving in procurement for the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). A gifted musician and talented crafter, Pat filled each new home with music and the companionship of her beloved dogs.
The Life of Wayne L. Hurlbut Wayne was born on April 18, 1930. A man of keen intellect, Wayne retired from a successful career as a sales representative for International Harvester and owned a chain of Village Inn restaurants. He was admired for his incredibly sharp memory and his passion for rare coins.
Wayne was the steady anchor for Pat’s adventurous spirit and her favorite partner on the dance floor. Together, they navigated thirty-eight years of life with a deep and abiding faith in Jesus. Their lives were rooted in the assurance of the Gospel; they found great peace in the understanding that through Jesus’s death, burial, and resurrection, they were promised a future reunion. This hope reassured them that they would not only be reunited with each other but also with Pat’s daughter, Candi, in the presence of their Lord.
Preceded in Death By: Pat and Wayne were preceded in death by Pat’s infant daughter, Candi Marie Southwick; Wayne’s daughter, Denise Fehringer; Pat’s parents and her siblings, Dorothy, Lois, and Ted; and Wayne’s mother and two brothers.
