Joyce's obituary
Surrounded by her loving children, Patricia Joyce Williams Maddox, 84, died on August 10, 2022. Joyce is survived by her children Cindi [John] Maddox Costoulas, David “Chip” "Tac" Maddox Jr., and Greg [Denisse] Maddox; grandchildren Cassi [Paul Bielaczyc] Costoulas, Manda Costoulas, and Gregory Maddox; and former husband David Maddox Sr; and twelve nieces and nephews. She joins her parents Charles Mell Williams and Sunie Mae Brewer Williams as well as her siblings Gladys Louise Williams (Pittman), Lyda Elizabeth Williams (Spratlin), William Mell Williams, Herbert Franklin Williams, Dorothy Kathleen Williams (Garrison), Chester Lamar Williams, Wilma Jeanette Williams (Rice), and Sarah Joan Williams in paradise.
Joyce was born in Bogart, Georgia in 1936. She graduated valedictorian of Bogart High School in 1954 and continued her studies at Truett McConnell University, graduating in 1956. Joyce worked with the Department of the Navy at Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia, and Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Kings Bay, Georgia. After 29 years of federal service, she retired in 1996.
After retiring, Joyce traveled the US and Canada by Winnebago for several years, accompanied by her faithful Shih Tzu, JoJo. In 2003 she returned home to care for her two older sisters until their deaths in 2005 and 2009. Joyce spent the last years of her life in Nicholson, Georgia, cared for by her son David.
Joyce enjoyed gardening, treasure hunting for her consignment business, reading, bowling, and traveling. In recent years she especially enjoyed tracing her family ancestry, watching her hummingbirds gather, and spending time with her family and lifelong friends.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens, Georgia at 1pm on September 24.
A living memorial of a Ginkgo tree will be planted at the Bogart Historical Museum in Bogart, Georgia in Mom's honor. Anyone can make a donation to the living memorial via Cindi's PayPal account (@cjcstoulas) with a note that it is for Joyce Maddox's Ginkgo.
