Patricia's obituary

Patricia Ann Soika, 85, died June 10, 2021, with her son, Michael Soika and daughter, Karen Soika by her side at Karen’s residence in Manasquan, New Jersey.

A memorial service will be held on October 16th at Mount Carmel Church in Elmsford, New York at 12:00 pm EDT.

Patricia was born October 28, 1935, in New York to Michael and Margaret McGivney . Her father was a Prison Ward at Tombs Prison, then later worked as a Security Guard for the New York Ethical Society, and later in his life he worked as a Clerk at the United States Post Office main branch on 33rd Street in New York City where he retired in the 1960’s. Her mother took care of the family and home, she died tragically from a brain clot when Patricia was only 5 years old. After the death of her Mother, Patricia moved in with her Mother’s brother’s family. Patricia was cared for by multiple family members during her childhood. Patricia’s Father’s sister, her Aunt Anna lived in Inwood, New York and this is where my Mother attended High School.

Patricia graduated from Good Shepard Catholic High School, in 1952. She graduated from CUNY Hunter College and St. John’s with a Bachelor’s of Science Nursing degree. Patricia worked at Queens General Hospital, where she met and later married Siegfried Soika (known to friends as “Sig”) on August 6, 1960. Patricia and Sig moved into an apartment in Queens and gave birth to their first daughter, Kerstin in December of 1961. They moved out of the city around 1963 and bought their home located at 249 Canterbury Road, White Plains, New York, where they proceeded to have 3 more children, Michael (September 1963), Janine (May 1965), and Karen (August 1966).

During the time Patricia lived with Sig and their children at Canterbury Road she was a very active member of Mount Carmel Church. Patricia served as the school nurse for many years. Her youngest daughter, Karen Soika attended Mount Carmel Elementary School. Her other children attended Alice E. Grady and Alexander Hamilton High School. Her youngest two daughters, Janine and Karen graduated from Our Lady of Victory Academy in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

Patricia’s interests included spending time with her family, reading, walking, knitting, sewing, cooking and baking. She devoted much of her time and energy as a devoted nurse and loving Mother. She was highly intelligent and a voracious reader. She would devore books on all sorts of topics in a matter of hours and retain everything she read. She had an incredible memory and could remember all sorts of things from personal family events and dates to political topics and religious facts and history. She was a very devoted Catholic and attended mass regularly and prayed daily.

Mrs. Soika is survived by her four children, their spouses, 8 grandchildren, 3 nieces, and 5 nephews. Her surviving children, spouses and their children include: Kerstin and her husband Jerold, and their 3 daughters Kristin, Julianne, and Elisa Jonas; her son Michael, his wife Kathy, and their 3 children: Christopher, Matthew, and Jennifer Soika; her daughter Janine Soika her husband Thomas Schumacher and their two sons Michael and Ryan Schumacher; and her youngest daughter Karen Soika. She is also survived by her 3 nieces, Kathy Boylan, Patty Hayes, and Janet Pfeifer; and her 5 nephews, Kevin McGivney, Tom McGivney, William McGivney, John McGivney, and Jimmy McGivney.

Mrs. Soika was preceded in death by her husband Siegfried Soika (1981), her older sister Ann (1932), her eldest brother, Joseph McGivney (2017), her middle brother William McGivney (2020), and her youngest brother, John (Jack) McGivney (2010).

Patricia was always an extremely caring and generous women, we know she would have preferred that you make a donation to your favorite charity in lieu of sending flowers. Some of her fondest causes included helping the homeless, terminally ill, children, elderly, as well as protecting the welfare of animals.
