Patty's obituary
Patricia Flowers Hicks, age 84, passed away on November 13, 2021 in Birmingham, AL. Her family and friends mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Patty; a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend. Patty was born on July 6, 1937 in Anderson, IN. Over her lifetime, she lived in several cities and states and settled in Birmingham, AL in the early 80’s where she married the love of her life, Don Edward Hicks.
Don preceded her in death in 2008.
Patty is survived by her four daughters, Kim Thomas (Scott Brown), Trisha Lizotte, Tami Macon, Nikki Rains, and one son, Frank Thomas (Bridget). She was also the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Patty had varied careers, including bartending, real estate sales, and auto sales. In 1987, she was one of the very few women owners of thoroughbred race horses, including Saint’s Approval, a winner of several races at the Birmingham Turf Club.
Her passion was tennis and she played competitively for 24 years. Both her teammates and her competitors always admired her remarkable angled drop shot. In addition to tennis, her many talents included cooking, biking, home decorating, and the art of friendship. But her talent that really stood out was her artistic ability to draw and paint in charcoal, oils, and acrylics.
Traveling with friends, preparing dinner for her family, and hugging her grand-puppies were but a few of her many joys. She remains a bright light that shines on all who were lucky enough to know and love her.
Since her lung cancer diagnosis in August 2019, Patty was extremely grateful for her support system of family and friends. She made us promise that there would be no funeral, but a party (with cake) after she was gone. A celebration of her life is being planned for January 2022.
In lieu of flowers, Patty asked that donations be made to Birmingham Planned Parenthood (weareplannedparenthood.org,; 1-800-430-4907) or to Alabama Animal Adoption Society (animaladoption.org; 205-871-6351). She also wanted to encourage everyone, if you haven’t already, to get your Covid-19 vaccination.
