Pat's obituary
Patricia Ann Cupit (née Gardner), lovingly known as “Pat,” passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, in Columbia, Maryland, at the age of 84, surrounded by her family. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Pat will be remembered for her resilience, warmth, and the meaningful connections she made throughout her life.
Born on June 19, 1941, in Washington, D.C., Pat was the daughter of Ella and Kenneth Gardner and a graduate of Herndon High School. She approached life with heart and determination from an early age—qualities that guided her through a life rich in experiences and relationships.
Pat spent many years as a U.S. Postal Carrier, a role she truly enjoyed for the people she met along the way. She later worked in office support and retail, where her humor, kindness, and easygoing nature quickly made her a favorite. Wherever she went, Pat had a natural way of making friends and leaving smiles behind.
Family was always at the center of Pat’s world. She was the proud mother of Dennis Law, Melissa Law, and the late Gregory Law, whom she held close in her heart. She shared a particularly close bond with her daughter Melissa and son-in-law Adam Judge and took great joy in her grandchildren—Steven, Katherine, and Erin Judge—who brought her endless happiness and pride.
Pat also embraced her extended family with love, including her stepchildren Christina and Chris Cupit and their spouses, Ray Young and Tiffany Cupit. She cherished her step-grandchildren Colin and Iris Young, as well as Michael and Gabrielle Cupit, welcoming each of them as her own.
Pat shared many years of family memories with her sister, Jude Gardner, and brother-in-law, Ned Pancoast. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son Gregory; her first husband, Thomas Law; and her second husband, Jack Cupit.
Pat’s vibrant spirit was impossible to miss. Her laugh was contagious, her smile welcoming, and her love of conversation well known. She could strike up a chat with anyone and especially enjoyed friendly competition during games of canasta and board games with friends.
She loved music and theatre and was often humming a favorite song. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling and ballroom dancing, and later found joy in sharing wine with friends and creating handmade cards. Pat was happiest when surrounded by good company, laughter, and conversation.
Though life brought its share of challenges, Pat faced them with strength and grace, never losing her smile. Her daughter often joked that she was like a cat, blessed with many lives and an unbreakable spirit.
Pat was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her memory will continue to bring comfort, laughter, and warmth to those who carry her in their hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 2, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in the Chapel at Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant, 9000 Father’s Legacy, Ellicott City, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
