The Life and Legacy of Patricia
Born on February 25, 1952, in Shaw, Mississippi, to Lewis and Geneva Berry, Patricia Berry-Jones lived a life of boundless energy, passion, and devotion. She transitioned on December 1, 2024, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of love, faith, and service.
Patricia’s journey began in Memphis, Tennessee, where she graduated from Southside High School in 1969. She pursued her dream of becoming an educator by earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from LeMoyne-Owen College in 1973. Her dedication to education fueled a career spanning more than 30 years, first in Memphis City Schools and later in Dallas Independent School District. Her passion for helping others thrive inspired her to earn a Master’s degree in Counseling from Amberton University in Dallas, Texas, eventually becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor.
Patricia obeyed the gospel in the early 1980s at East Haven Church of Christ in Memphis, Tennessee. This marked the beginning of a lifelong walk with Christ that became the foundation of her strength and perseverance. Her faith sustained her through every chapter of her life, leading her to live with purpose and grace.
In 1986, Patricia sought a better life for herself and her children, relocating to Dallas, Texas, where she continued her teaching career. A devout Christian, she placed her membership at several congregations in Dallas, including Cedar Crest, Marsalis Avenue, Cherry Valley (now Cedar Valley), and finally Greenville Avenue Church of Christ, where she became deeply connected to her church family.
In 1988, Patricia enlisted in the Army National Guard, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and adventure. Her service, which spanned several years, provided her with unique experiences and countless stories to share. A proud veteran, Patricia later reconnected with her military roots and dreamed of opening a funeral home catering specifically to veterans' needs.
In 2009, Patricia moved to Houston, Texas, to be closer to her grandchildren. There, she continued her career in education as an Academic Advisor at Houston Community College. She also established her private practice, Sunrise Professional Counseling and Consulting Services, PLLC, where she specialized in grief counseling.
As an entrepreneur, Patricia founded PD&S Enterprises, LLC, and the 55+ & Still Poppin Academy. As a Reinvention Life Coach, she dedicated herself to empowering women over 55—particularly veteran women—struggling with self-esteem and confidence. Her mission was to help others embrace their authenticity and live adventurous, fulfilling lives.
Patricia’s talents extended to writing, earning her recognition as an Amazon Best-Selling Author. She contributed to three installments of the When Destiny Needs an Intervention anthology series, a visionary project spearheaded by her daughter, Dr. Shana. In this endeavor, co-authors were affectionately known as the Destiny Diamonds, and Patricia proudly embraced the title of the Original Destiny Diamond. She further showcased her literary gifts by publishing a solo book on grief, offering comfort and insight to those navigating loss.
At the time of her passing, Patricia was working on her fifth book, which reflected her inspiring journey from military service to civilian life. Her passion for serving others also extended to her role as Secretary for Her VOICE, a nonprofit organization founded by Dr. Shana, dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic violence through mentorship and education. Patricia’s legacy of love, resilience, and empowerment shines through her writing and unwavering commitment to supporting others. And her love for traveling was fulfilled in her newest venture as an Independent Travel Business Owner with Inteletravel.
Patricia’s relentless spirit and radiant personality made her a beloved member of her community. At Memorial Church of Christ, her current church home in Houston, her generosity and warmth touched countless lives. And no matter where she was, Patricia was never seen without her beloved signature pearls, her favorite accessory next to her radiant smile. Whether dressed in jeans or a flowing gown, her pearls were a constant reflection of her timeless elegance and confidence. She lived life with a full heart, and her vibrant presence was felt by all who knew her. Whether it was her infectious laugh, her radiant “million-dollar smile,” or her impeccable sense of style, Patricia had a way of brightening any room she entered.
More than her professional accomplishments, Patricia was deeply devoted to her family. She was a loving mother to her children, Donney Simone Jones (Lisa) and Shana Denise Lewis (Sizwe), and a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Patricia embraced her role as “Mama Pat or Mrs. Pat” to countless adopted daughters and sons, offering her compassion and wisdom to all who needed it.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lillian Pearl Brooks, and her brother Lewis Augustus Berry Jr. She leaves behind a loving family, including her children, grandchildren, sister Gloria Jean (John), brothers Darris (Linda) and Roland, aunt Johnnie Mae and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Patricia lived a life filled with love, faith, and joy, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
