Patricia's obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Patricia “Patti” Baker, who left us on January 4, 2025 at the age of 77. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Baker, her father, Samuel Genua, and her mother, Phyllis Genua (Edkins). She is survived by her brother, Nicolo Genua, son, Chad Baker, daughter-in-law Elizabeth, and four grandchildren, Avery, Dean, Natalie, and Henry. Patricia was born in Washington, D.C. to Samuel and Phyllis on July 18, 1947.

To know Patti was to know joy. She was a beacon of light and delight to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her warm, caring personality was a comfort to many, and her unending happiness radiated out to those around her. She had a beautiful smile and a laugh that could fill a room. Her passion and calling in life was caring for children. That was epitomized most by her wonderful relationship with her son, Chad, who got all the love from his mother that he could ever ask for. But it went so far beyond that. After graduating from Towson University with a degree in Education, Patti and Neil moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1977. Patti taught kindergarten for two years in Columbus before establishing her own after-school care program for neighborhood kids at her home Upper Arlington. For years, the Baker household was the center of the universe for many kids of the River Ridge area of Upper Arlington. Once her son entered middle school, Patti re-entered the workforce joining the latchkey programs at Wickliffe Elementary School and Burbank Elementary School. Her legacy will continue to thrive in the hearts of the countless children she cared for, and in the community that she devoted her life to.

While Patti loved being around kids, nothing could compare to the pride and joy she felt for her grandchildren. Being a grandma was Patti's true life’s purpose. She showered her grandchildren with love and attention. Her home in Ocean City, Maryland was a kids dream come true. Books galore. Toys in every nook. And candy on demand. Patti also loved watching her grandchildren learn and grow. There were always science experiments to be completed, fairy gardens to build, and fun activities for her grandchildren to do when they went to Nana & Beach Pops house.

Patricia's vibrant spirit, joyous disposition, and caring heart will be deeply missed by all her friends, family, and all those whose lives she touched. As we grieve her loss, we celebrate the amazing woman that she was, and the beautiful impact she had on our world.

A celebration of life will be held for Patrician on Sunday, January 12 from Noon to 4pm at her son's home in Silver Spring, Maryland.
