Pantaleon Tal's obituary
He is survived and will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 56 years, Athena (Paculan) Soriano and his children and their spouses, Geraldine & Henry, Jennifer & Tony, Nathaniel and Melanie and Kristin and Kenneth. Tal will also be fondly remembered by his nine grandchildren, Paolo Enrique, Reeca Natalie, Katrina Isabel, Kevin Anthony, Ryanne Erin, Ian Patrick, Stacey Lauren, Alyssa Shannon and Jenna Maryann. Tal was predeceased by his parents, Pantaleon, Sr. and Beatriz Celis Soriano.
Born on July 3, 1936 in Talisay, Negros Occidental, Philippines, he moved his family to Manila, Philippines in 1967. He then immigrated with his family to Jersey City, NJ in 1985 and remained there until 2016 when he moved to San Ramon, California along with Athena and their youngest daughter Kristin and her family.
Tal’s early life was a challenging one. He was the prime example of the heroic self-made, successful man who goes by the premise that initiative, hard work, a positive mindset, unwavering faith, willpower and treating people right will always bring you success and happiness and the good life. Born into a family with modest means, young Tal often soldiered on through the many difficult times in his life. He sold ‘pandesal’ during his grade school years trying to avoid having to rely on his parents. In high school, he worked at a railroad facility in order to pay for his tuition. This diligence and industry would prove to be the key to his future successes in all aspects of his life. In academics, he was a consistent scholar earning countless meritorious awards throughout grade school and high school. He went to university with a full scholarship at the UNO-R (University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos) in 1958 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, with distinction (Cum Laude). Tal earned his CPA in 1960. He furthered his studies and attended the University of the Philippines, graduating in 1971 with a master’s degree in Business Administration. He also attended law school at the Ateneo de Manila University but due to his hectic schedule decided to discontinue his pursuit for a jurisprudence degree.
After college, Tal worked for many distinguished companies, first, as a staff accountant at Miller, Cruz & Co., an accounting firm, then at the Philippine National Cooperative Bank. He then worked for the Insular Bank of Asia and America where he eventually rose to Assistant Vice-President and thereafter at the Commercial Credit Corporation as Vice-President of Operations. Lastly, Tal worked for Karamfil Import-Export where he worked as Financial Controller before immigrating to the United States with his family in 1985. In New York, Tal worked at Mutual of New York and later on at the Bank of New York as a senior portfolio accountant for several years. After 44 years of working Tal finally retired in 2002.
Tal met his beautiful wife, Athena "Dodo" Paculan Soriano, at the PNCB and, after a year, got married in 1963 at the majestic Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral. Their marriage of fifty-six years produced three daughters, a son and nine loving grandchildren. He will continue to serve as a guiding light and an exemplary role model worthy of emulation to every one of them.
Benjamin Franklin once said, “It is a grand mistake to think of being great without goodness; and I pronounce it as certain, that there never was yet a truly great man, that was not at the same time truly virtuous.” This was Tal Soriano in a nutshell. He was the kindest, most caring, generous, humble, loving and sweetest man you can ever meet; a man full of virtue, a man full of goodness, a great man.
