Pam's obituary
In Loving Memory of Pamela Crouse Newton
Pamela Crouse Newton, known affectionately as Pam, graced this world on February 5, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her journey through life led her to make Scottsdale, Arizona, her beloved home since 1977. On October 12, 2023, our hearts grew heavy as we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman.
Pamela was more than a mother, sister, and wife; she was a constant source of love and kindness that touched every life she encountered. Her husband, William B. Newton, was her high school sweetheart, and their remarkable 57-year marriage was an enduring testament to their bond.
Pamela was a loving mother to her children: David Newton, Elena Newton, and Nora Muller. Her heart also held a special place for her sister, Jane Kramer, and her three brothers: Hank Crouse, Steve Crouse, and Whitney Crouse. Her cousin, Susanne Weber Meier, was like a daughter to her, and she was a devoted step-daughter to Sylvia Crouse and John Dillin, both of whom held a special place in her heart.
Pamela was not just a mother, but a warm-hearted soul who showered us with love in the most beautiful and unique ways. She had a nickname among her grandchildren - Grandma Hugs. And while she may not have been the type to give big, bear hugs, her love was ever-present in every little thing she did. It was in the cards and notes she sent, meticulously timed for birthdays, holidays, or just to let you know she was thinking of you. Her words on paper were like a warm embrace, a reminder of her unwavering affection.
And then there were the blankets – each one a masterpiece she crafted with her own hands. When you wrapped yourself in those blankets on a cold winter's night, it felt like being wrapped in her love, and we lovingly called them "grandma hugs."
Every year, without fail, she'd create calendars for the entire family. These weren't just calendars; they were a lifeline connecting us all. Birthdays, anniversaries, addresses – all meticulously organized, ensuring our bonds stayed strong, no matter the distance.
Pamela's 'hugs' weren't confined to her immediate family. They spread far and wide, touching lives she might not have even known about. Through her acts of kindness, she crocheted prayer shawls and blankets for veterans, sewed pencil bags for children who needed them, and created walker and wheelchair bags that offered comfort and convenience to those in need. She made these by hand and gave them away by the hundreds. Her suggestion of port pillows for cancer patients brought relief to individuals undergoing challenging treatments, provided solace in their toughest moments.
She crafted travel bags for those heading to the hospital and tote bags for Terry at Little Hearts Mini Tales, who distributed them to children and individuals in shelters, homes, rehabilitation centers, and more. Her creations not only served practical purposes but also conveyed her love and compassion, offering a source of comfort during difficult times.
Looking beyond her generous side, Pam also had a creative side. She was a skilled draftsman in her early career, and later she became an accomplished photographer, capturing the beauty of various subjects with her keen eye and creative talent. Her love for photography led her to apply her skills in different areas, including her work at the Phoenix Zoo, where she dedicated thousands of hours as a volunteer, contributing significantly to Zoo programs. Her extensive collection of photos was a testament to her passion for the art.
Pam also had a passion for travel, with a special affinity for England and Switzerland. Her Swiss cousins were an integral part of her life; the family had maintained an amazing connection through the generations since the American side emigrated, with her help.
Pam also had a deep love for animals, including horses and dogs, that brought immense joy to her life. Horses held a special place in her heart, and she found solace and joy in their presence. Over the years, she owned several horses, but her most recent and cherished companions were the mini horses: Bear, Red, and Pete. Her beloved Scotties, as well as two fox terriers, were also cherished members of her family. Her dog Jack will find a loving home with her daughter Nora, where he will continue to be cherished.
Pamela's Christian faith held a special place in her heart. Her faith was not just a belief; it was a way of life. She was a dedicated student of the Holy Trinity and embraced her spiritual journey with enthusiasm, continually seeking to deepen her understanding. Her faith was a wellspring of strength and love, which she extended to others through her actions. One of her most loved passages in the Bible was 1 Corinthians 13, verses 4-7, which speaks beautifully about love:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Pam's loving nature was further demonstrated through her extensive prayer list. She would diligently pray for those on her list, going so far as to restart from the bottom periodically to ensure that no one was left out. She also took the time to write birthday, get well, and other cards to individuals who were elderly or had no one to turn to. She understood the profound impact a kind word and gesture could have on someone's life, ensuring that they did not feel alone.
As we gather to remember Pamela, we can't help but be grateful for the love and connections she nurtured. Her 'hugs,' whether in the form of blankets, calendars, or acts of kindness, continue to touch our lives, tangible reminders of her enduring love.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Pamela Crouse Newton will be held on November 14th, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Desert Foothills Lutheran Church, with a reception to follow.
