Pammy's obituary
Pamela Ann Furlong
(1948-2025)
Long-time Montclair, New Jersey, resident Pamela Ann Furlong passed away August 18 in Naples, Florida, after a brief illness. She was 77 years of age.
Pamela was born at Mountainside Hospital in May of 1948, one of six children of Frances and Robert Furlong, who with their family were residents of Christopher Street in Montclair for more than 60 years. Pam and other family members were active in Montclair civic and charitable activities that included the funding, by her extended family, of a new athletic facility for Montclair High School students, the current Furlong Field House at Woodman Field.
Pamela attended St. Cassian’s Elementary School and Lacordaire Academy before graduating from The Kimberly School in Montclair (Class of 1966). As a girl, Pamela was an accomplished equestrian and cadet squad leader in The Girl’s Mounted Troop of Essex County, an affiliate of the Junior Calvary of America. During high school she won first prize in the Essex County science fair for her biology class project studying the nervous systems of small animals, a research project that led to Pam’s appearance on the television program, “Science All Stars,” broadcast by ABC Television. As a young woman Pamela celebrated her faith in Christ as a choir member at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, singing at mass together with her mother and Aunt Dorothy McGuire of Montclair.
Pamela earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart and Columbia University and studied at The Sorbonne in Paris.
During her professional life, Pamela worked as a research assistant in the Paris office of the American law firm, Davis Polk; as a staff translation associate with The United Nations in New York and as an adjunct professor teaching French at the university level in the U.S. and abroad.
A private memorial service is being held by her family. Pamela is survived by her sisters Lucinda, Joan and Frances and her brothers Gordon and Charles Furlong and by an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and her very caring Aunt and Uncle. Contributions in Pamela’s memory may be made through this website to “Nancy’s Place” Covenant House of Montclair, a transitional living facility for homeless and at-risk youth with mental health needs.
