Oyade's obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Oyade Mabina, a cherished member of our community. Born on August 9, 1939, Mrs. Mabina departed from us on March 16, 2024, leaving a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience.
Oyade was the beloved sister of Ayoka A., dear aunt of Alasire A., Onisuru ‘Mo’ A., and Ajani A., and doting grandmother to Ishara Love and David Shields III. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Fidelis Mabina, and her loving mother, Mabel C.
A proud alumna of the University of Illinois Chicago, Mrs. Mabina held a Bachelor of Arts degree. She built a successful career in real estate in Chicago, known for her astute appraisal skills. Her dedication to her profession was only matched by the love she had for her family.
Mrs. Mabina was a spiritual woman, often seen at the Soka Gakkai International USA Buddhist Temple. Her love for music, specifically the tunes of Miles Davis, Anita Baker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and Donna Summer, often filled her home. In her leisure, she enjoyed shows like Law and Order, Sanford and Sons, and Judge shows, as well as the movie, Akeelah and the Bee.
Mrs. Mabina had a taste for all types of cuisines, with favorites like roasted chickpeas, potato chips, collard greens, and chocolate candy. Her love of art was evident in her appreciation of sculpture and paintings. She enjoyed playing dominos and was often found at local spots including Whole Foods, McDonald’s on Main St., and the Evanston Public Library. Her top vacation spot was her previous home, Tanzania.
A woman of wisdom, Mrs. Mabina always encouraged others to practice self-care and taught us the importance of advocating for oneself. Her gentle, kind, and comedic spirit will be deeply missed, but her essence and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
