Owen's obituary
Born in Snowflake, Arizona, on February 8, 1945, Owen was number 15 of 18 children born to Charles Purley and Belle Brinkerhoff Shumway. Raised in the small town of Woodruff Arizona, he was a 1964 graduate of Holbrook High School. Following his graduation, he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in New Zealand, where he developed a great love for the Maori people. Upon his return, he courted and married Janet Wren, also of Woodruff. They were married for time and all eternity on October 28, 1966 in the Mesa, Arizona temple, and they raised 9 children together.
Owen was a true ‘Good Samaritan’ - whether it was a friend, church member, work buddy, or just a stranger down on his luck, Owen spent his time, energy and resources to help those who crossed his path. His legacy is one of finding joy in hard work, and his children developed the desire to love and serve others from his example. Owen was extremely proud of his family and loved spending time with his siblings, nieces, and nephews, so reunions were his favorite summer pastime. Owen enjoyed many things during his lifetime; temple work, hunting, fishing, and gardening were at the top of his list!
Owen leaves behind Janet, his wife of 53 years; his children: Jana (Joseph Roth), Charla, Darla (Joe Dobbins), Julia (Kevin Holmes), Cal, Sessal (Ann), Myrna (John Harris), Tia (Ben Peters) and Mel (Whitney). He also leaves behind his siblings Beth (Joy Pearce), Mina (Hal Evans), Lee, Dean (Kathleen), and Doyle (Janice), along with 30 grandchildren; 7 great grandsons; and many, many, nieces and nephews. His loved ones are comforted in knowing that Owen is rejoicing with his parents and siblings (especially Gerry); his best friend Charlie, and many other friends who went before him. What a joyful reunion is occurring! Those of us left behind will wait patiently for the day when we will all be reunited in eternity.
Community and family members are invited to participate in a Celebration of Life in Queen Creek, Arizona on November 25th, and a graveside service at the Woodruff, Arizona on November 28th. (for details see the event section).
