Background
Orion had expressed in the past that he would want a party for his funeral, with a cover charge. We are honoring his wish by throwing a party to celebrate his life, and will use the cover charge proceeds to donate to this organization. This link can also be used to make a donation if you are not able to attend the party.
Orion had a relatively mild case of asthma since childhood, with no previous hospitalizations for asthma. He developed a sudden onset of severe asthma on 9/23, which led to cardiac arrest and an anoxic brain injury. The pulmonologist at Scripps Mercy ICU, Dr. Lichter, informed us that most people are not aware that even a mild case can escalate quickly and even lead to death.
We decided that we wanted to donate to an asthma organization, to increase education and awareness. We chose the Central California Asthma Collaborative because they are a smaller organization that works directly with families in the Central Valley, many of them who are low-income and might have limited access to life-saving medications or tools to control their asthma. The money they receive would be of greater value than money sent to a national organization, and would be used to directly help families in that region. The Central Valley is known to have a high rate of asthma due to agricultural pollutants there. Orion lived in the Central Valley (Visalia) for a year.
