Oralia's obituary

Oralia Palacios, our beloved mother, passed away on December 31st after a brief, yet deadly bout of pneumonia.

Oralia was born in Donna, Texas, to a family of migrant farm workers.  Her father had emigrated from Nuevo Leon, Mexico with his parents in 1917 when he was 5.    He married Guadalupe Palacios, the mother of his 8 children (Mauricio, Jr., Carlos, Oralia, Rosa, Alice, Odilia, Amador and Francisco), and they ultimately settled in California.

Oralia met and married Richard R. Weilandt, Sr., while he was enlisted in the  U.S. Air Force.  She had gone on a double date with her sister and met Richard.  They married and had four children together prior to divorcing.

Oralia came home to Texas and spent the rest of her life in San Antonio.  While on vacation, visiting her youngest daughter,  Renee, in Houston, she caught Covid and succumbed to a secondary pneumonia infection.

She was a fan of classical music and opera.  She spent the last days of her life listening to the music of Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff and Puccini because it gave her great comfort.

Oralia will be greatly missed by her daughters, who had the great privilege of being her caregivers in her last years.   She was an excellent cook, and she taught her daughters her love of baking and international cuisine.  She shared her love of education, and inspired her children to rise above the poverty of her own upbringing and limited, 8th grade education.  She dreamed of a better life for her children and believed that education was the key to success.

Oralia devoted 50 years of her life to her faith as a Jehovah's Witness, and took great comfort in the promise of the Resurrection.  Her friend Suzy was a source of great companionship as they shared their faith and strengthened each other in their love of Christ and their God, Jehovah.
