Ophelia's obituary
Ophelia V. Martinez, 80, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025, surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of her home.
Born on July 16, 1945, in Yoakum, Texas, Ophelia lived a life filled with warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Known as the heart of the Martinez family, Ophelia’s nurturing spirit and steady presence created a lasting foundation of love and unity.
She met the love of her life, Joseph W. Martinez, while still in high school at the age of 17. The two married on February 12, 1963, and over the following decade welcomed four children. During Joe’s military service, the couple traveled extensively across the U.S. and abroad, giving Ophelia the opportunity to experience different cultures and make many lifelong friends. With a warm smile and open heart, she made friends wherever she went and never met a stranger.
Ophelia approached life with joy and creativity. She had a love for dressing up and accessorizing, always with flair and grace. She enjoyed dancing, sewing, crocheting, and even woodworking—but her favorite pastime was gardening. Her green thumb was legendary, and she had a remarkable gift for nurturing life from even the smallest cutting.
She also had a playful, mischievous sense of humor that made her all the more endearing. Whether through a teasing remark or a knowing glance, she loved to prod those closest to her with affection and wit, always managing to draw a smile or a laugh.
Ophelia’s quiet strength and values were shaped in part by her lifelong Catholic faith, which guided how she loved, gave, and cared for others.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Joseph W. Martinez; her parents, Margaret and Valentine Villarreal; her brother, Eddie Villarreal; and her sister, Ruby Casillas.
She is survived by her children, Joseph W. Martinez Jr. (Lisa), Dina Fallowfield (Brian), Anthony Martinez (Caroline), and Jason Martinez (Stacey); nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren, and her brothers, Alfred Villarreal, Jimmy Villarreal, and Tommy Villarreal. Her legacy continues through her loved ones—rooted in the love, grace, and laughter she poured into their lives.
A memorial service celebrating Ophelia’s life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Ashdown Assembly of God Church, 150 S. Walker Street, Ashdown, AR, with her grandson Joseph Wallace Martinez III** officiating. A lunch reception will follow the service, offering time for family and friends to share memories and honor her remarkable life.
