Omar had a way of sneaking into your heart. He was quiet, humble and true to the people he loved. I was lucky enough to watch him grow—from his elementary school days all the way up until just a few months ago.
Back in those early years, he was the picture of sweetness—always respectful, always kind. As he got a little older, I remember driving him and a few others to their confirmation classes. Now, he might have been there partly because he was sweet on a girl in the class, but he followed through nonetheless. He completed his confirmation and continued to be a steady presence in our church community.
During those 'tween' years, I noticed a few things about Omar: he loved spicy food, and he never wasted a bite. To this day, he is the only person I’ve ever known who could eat a taco with such precision that not a single shred of filling fell anywhere but into his mouth.
Omar was very artistic. I remember mentioning offhand that I wanted something 'Texas' painted on my fence. I didn’t have to ask; a few days later, I walked out to find that Omar had simply done it. That was who he was—quietly observant and incredibly gifted.
The last time I saw Omar was at a family function, and what I saw was a man completely transformed by love. He had his children with him, and he simply beamed. He adored them; they were his world. To Omar, family was everything—and if you were his friend, you were family, too.
Omar, I will miss you being here on earth. But I am so grateful that through your friendship with Chance, you became a permanent part of our lives. We love you, and until we meet again, we will see you in our dreams."
To Omar’s family, prayers, hugs and condolences. Omar absolutely loved each and every one of you. Please know I loved Omar and my love for Omar extends to you, his family. And Rita, from one Momma’s heart to another - I am at a loss for words but I have tears that I will share with you.
