Olayimka Adekoya: A Symphony of Faith, Love, and Resilience.
In a world that cherishes exceptional souls, Oluyimka Adekoya stood as a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived. Her journey was one adorned with dedication, love, faith, and the joyous melodies of music.
Oluyimka was born on September 24, 1954, into a Christian home of Late Pa & Ma James Adeyemi Fashina Dokunmu of blessed memory in Lagos State, Nigeria. Her early education at Mayflower School, Ikenne, laid the groundwork for a lifetime of academic and professional excellence.
She attended the University of Lagos and graduated with a BSC in French and English in 1975. She went on to become a French, English and Literature teacher and later a vice-principal of Oke-Ira Grammar School, Oke-Ira, and also as Principal Ikeja High School, Maryland, Lagos. Her career with the Lagos State Government spanned almost three decades, starting in 1976 and culminating with her retirement in 2005. After retirement from public service, she worked at the Apostolic Faith Secondary School as the pioneer vice-principal for some years. Her career path, marked by tenacity and dedication, left an indelible mark on her colleagues and the many lives she touched through her work.
In 1977, Oluyimka's life took a joyful turn with her marriage to Late Pastor Idowu Adekoya, a union that saw her embracing the roles of wife and mother with devotion. Her sons and family were the heartbeats of her life, filling her days with immeasurable happiness. She and her husband were both immensely devoted to God’s work by proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ in schools and the neighbourhood. In 2003, her husband who was also a warrior of faith passed on to glory.
As a devout member of the Apostolic Faith Church, she was deeply rooted in her unwavering faith. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence. It guided her through life's challenges and was a source of strength not just for her, but for all who knew her. She became a member of the Apostolic Faith Choir, singing alto and playing the violin in 1985. Music was not just a hobby for her; they were expressions of her vibrant spirit. Her love for hymns and the violin brought a unique melody to her life, and remained a cherished form of expressing herself.
On October 8, 2023, she departed this earth peacefully after a life well-lived. She is survived by her sons Bisolu and Bisodun, her daughters; Deroju and Bose, her grandchildren: Sophie, Sewa, Daniella, David and Nathan, her sisters, Esther Akano and Kemi Gbasingha, cousins, nephews, nieces and the entire families of Adekoya and Dokunmu.
