Ofelia's obituary

OFELIA PRESAS was born OFELIA DEL CARMEN ALDAO y GRAÑA in La Habana, Cuba on April 2, 1933. She was a first generation Cuban, daughter of Galician immigrants Aurea Graña Cid and Manuel Aldao Pan. She grew up attending her beloved Santa Rosalía Catholic School, where she excelled in basketball. As a member of the Cuba Women’s National Basketball Team, “el básquet”, took her extensively throughout Central and South America. Ofelia was a stellar player who wore the #20, which became “su numero de la suerte”. (She would want you to play “el 20” in today’s lottery.)

She married Antonio “Ñico” Presas in Los Pinos, La Habana in 1962. A daughter, Ana María, was born in 1964 and a son, Antonio, in 1965. The young family went into exile with her mother in 1967, settling in Los Angeles, California. A daughter, Helen, was born in 1969. They relocated to Miami in 1990.

Ofelia spent the last 15 years residing with her youngest daughter and family in Venice, FL. Ofelia was affectionately referred to as “Fafa” or “Fafi”, a nickname coined by her grandchildren that ultimately became her mononym for all who knew and loved her. She cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren sharing Cuban pastelitos and memories.

Ofelia passed away peacefully on January 25, 2021 in Venice, FL in the loving and devoted care of her daughter, Helen. She was predeceased by her father and mother, in 1969 and 1976, respectively; her brother, Manuel, in 1994; her adored niece, Ofelia (“Ofelita”), in 2000. Her husband passed away in 2008.

Ofelia is survived by daughter Ana and son-in-law Julio Quiñones and grandchildren: Lauren (Fili), Robert, John-Paul, Maria, and Isabel. Also survived by grandson-in-law Michael Fili and great grandsons: Dominick, Anthony, and Vincent Fili. Survived by son Antonio and daughter-in-law Rosie Barreneche and grandchildren: Emilio and Celine. Also survived by daughter Helen and son-in-law Steven Ellis and granddaughters: Meredith and Claire. Ofelia is also survived by sister-in-law Magdalena Aldao and grand nieces Yesenia and Jennifer, and grand nephew Kevin.
