Norman's obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Norman B. Mills. Norman was born on July 27, 1934, in Terre Haute, Indiana and departed from us on July 9, 2023, at Lake Wylie, South Carolina. He was an extraordinary man whose life was marked by his outgoing and friendly nature. Norman never met a stranger, and his presence had a way of making anyone feel at ease.
Norman is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Joan Marie (Ray) Mills, his son Erik Norman (Donna) Mills, and daughter Lisa Marie (Jon) Dowell. His absence will also be profoundly felt by his grandchildren - Hannah Mills, Laia Mills, Amber (Ryan) Griffin, Jonathon Dowell, and Nicole Dowell - who were the apple of his eye.
Norman was drafted into the United States Army in March of 1952. He served his country honorably between the years of 1952 to 1958. His extensive knowledge of communications equipment led to him being put by Army Commanders into the Signal Core, where he served his entire tour of duty. Norman went on to work for Indiana Bell and AT&T for 40 years with perfect attendance!
A man of simple and endearing tastes, Norman loved anything grilled to perfection. His appreciation for music was rooted in the classics of the 50's, and his sports loyalty was unwaveringly with The Chicago Bears and Notre Dame. A lover of card games, Norman could often be found in engaging and laughter-filled competitions with his family. His recreational time was often spent fishing, working diligently in his garden or sitting beside his wife on their cherished porch.
Norman held a deep affection for the tropical beauty of Hawaii and the warm allure of Florida, the fantastic fishing lakes of Minnesota and the beaches of South Carolina, where he spent many memorable vacations. But no matter the location, Norman's heart was most content when he was surrounded by his family. His outlook on life was simple, yet profound: "Be kind, work hard, and support your family". It was a testament to the kind of man he was, and this message will live on in his memory.
But perhaps the most enduring part of Norman's legacy is the love, kindness, and respect that he extended to each individual he met. He touched countless lives with his generosity, empathy, and enduring spirit. His life may have ended, but his legacy of love, kindness, and respect, particularly to his children and grandchildren, will continue to inspire.
Norman Mills was a beacon of love and kindness, a pillar of strength to his family, and a friend to all. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those he loved.
