Norma's obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mother, Norma Jean (Norton) Esposito, who peacefully departed on Saturday, June 21st, in her home, with loved ones at her side.

Born on August 29th, 1952 in Washington DC, to Robert and Norma Norton, she was raised in Alexandria, Virginia with her sisters Kitty, Helen, Robin and Patty and her brother, Bobby, and remained there through her childhood, teenage years, and early adulthood. While the majority of Norma’s adult life was spent in New York, she always identified strongly with her Virginia roots and never lost the ‘southern’ qualities of hospitality, politeness, and kindness that she was raised on.

After her time as a dedicated homemaker, Norma thoroughly enjoyed performing a variety of jobs, such as working in a flower shop, serving as an aide to the Dominican Sisters of Hope, and being a teacher of Esthetics at the Beauty School of Middletown - all of which provided her the opportunity to serve others and form lasting connections with those around her. As much as she loved her work, none of those roles gave her as much joy as the one she assumed upon the birth of her first grandchild in 2010, when she found her calling as a Nini. She wholeheartedly embraced her appointment to that position, and spent each one of the subsequent 5,276 days providing warmth, laughter and love (and lots of hugs and kisses) to her grandchildren and those around them.

Apart from being an over-achieving grandmother, Norma was an avid reader - often finishing multiple books in a week - and enjoyed regular visits to the library and book store. She was an accomplished soup-maker and, as a result of her marriage to an Italian for nearly 50 years, made a pretty mean pot of meatballs and sauce. She loved music, art, Broadway shows, card games and board games - all of which were amplified when she was able to enjoy them with family and friends.

Norma is survived by her husband, Charles (Charlie), her children, Nicholas (Nicky), Vincenza (Jennie), and Elizabeth (Lizzy), her grandchildren, Gabriel, Allie, Mila, and Javi, her children-in-law Ina and Tom, and countless other family members and friends who were blessed to be able to know her.

The family will be holding a private memorial service on a future date. A remembrance website has been created for anyone who would like to share their condolences or memories (stories, pictures, etc) of Norma - https://everloved.com/life-of…

Those wishing to honor her memory with a monetary donation are asked to do so by planting a tree in her name through the Arbor Day foundation
