Nora " Snooky "'s obituary
Known lovingly as “Snooky” by friends and family alike. Our Snooky was born in NYC on July 14th, 1941 to Nora and Peter Hanly. Snooky was also raised by Alfred Hanly, her adoring Uncle. Snooky would want to stress the fact that she was the youngest , cutest and best irish dancer of the Hanly sisters! She relished in being the baby and was very loved by her sisters Patsy ( Cavo) , Dorothy Clarke , their husbands James and Patrick and families.
Snooky was a graduate of Holy Trinity and Cathedral High School in NYC. She worked at Englewood Hospital and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital as a medical staff secretary, she also worked at the Port Authority in the World Trade Center where she found and maintained life long friendships. She took great pride in her work and was loved and respected by all who worked with her.
Snooky was married to her devoted husband Roger Thomas Berlin for 55 years. The handsome couple moved to Leonia where they lived and raised their children Keith Alan Berlin (Lisa), Colin Brian Berlin (R.I.P. 9/14/92), Eric Andrew Berlin (Celestina) (R.I.P. 3/25/11), and Rita Theresa Spader (Brian) for 45 amazing years, until they decided to retire in beautiful Dania Beach Florida.
Nothing brought a smile to Snooky’s heart like being with her 11 Grandchildren. Colleen, Kyle, Allison, Evan, Erin, Peter, Kiera, Sam Berlin, along with Colin and Charlie Mahoney and Beau Bradshaw Spader , each one of them can all happily sing the catchy Irish diddie she sang to them over and over again!
She welcomed many more children into her life and home often fostering countless children through the years.
Kindness, fun, loving, funny, loyal and faithful, are the words that describe Snooky Berlin. Snook was never without her large glass with many ice cubes, rum and coke poured just right, a fantastic story which she was not afraid to repeat, or her warm caring smile and infectious laugh..
As her request she wished to be cremated and buried with her sons at Gate Of Heaven Cemetery , Valhalla NY. Although her very bright vibrant light was dimmed She would not want tears and sadness surrounding her life and memories. We ask that you join us in celebrating her wonderful life. Friday Sept 14th at 10:30 am St Catharines Church 215 Essex Avenue , Spring Lake NJ followed by a life celebration luncheon at Reef & Barrel , Manasquan NJ . Her favorite Irish band will lead her celebration. Snooky loved her Irish step dancing and her yearly Irish Cruise with Wille Lynch. This is her final Cruise.
In lieu of flowers we ask donations please be made in her name to The Allaire Community Farm, this local farms goal is to utilize rescued animals and the working farm environment to nurture special needs and at risk youth populations along with their families. This is accomplished through programs, events and outreaches throughout the year that focus on animal therapy, equine therapy, organic gardening, vocational training and self esteem building.
