Nora's obituary

Nora Leiva, 64, of Greensboro, NC, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on November 9th, after a long battle with vascular disease.

She was born in Valparaiso, Chile, on November 26, 1957. She was preceded in death by her parents Ines Silva Blest and Carlos Leiva Vergara. She is survived by her two daughters Carla Searcy and Alejandra Flores and her son Carlos Leiva. She is also survived by her 2 sisters Marianela and Myriam Leiva and 4 granddaughters, whom she especially adored.

Nora had a distinguished career. She graduated from “Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso, Chile” in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in English. She also received a master’s degree in Spanish Literature and Linguistics from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she graduated summa cum laude. During her teaching career in her home country Chile, she worked for the public and private education system and at the United States Embassy. Nora arrived in the United States in 2002 with her three children as a VIF (Visiting international faculty) teacher, where she started her journey as a teacher for the United States public education system. During this time, she had the possibility to share her knowledge with hundreds of students and was able to mentor and work collaboratively with other teachers in her field.

Throughout her life, Nora demonstrated herself to be an innate leader with the gift of perseverance, intelligence, and with an incomparable strength that gave her the courage to overcome many obstacles along her life. In addition to teaching, what Nora enjoyed the most was to be with her family, taking trips, especially to the beach and her independence.

In the last two years, her health deteriorated, but during this time she never lost hope and fought constantly, keeping a positive view of life.

We know that we can’t have you here, but we are happy knowing that your presence will always be with us. Goodbye to a wonderful woman and a beautiful mother.

The service will be held at Definition Church located at 1806 Merritt Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407 on Monday, November 14, 2022, at 1:00 PM. We extend this invitation to all those who knew Nora and wish to celebrate her life.
