Niko's obituary
Niko the German Shepherd and gentle giant traveled peacefully across the rainbow bridge on Saturday, November 8, 2025. He was born on August 8, 2011, rescued by Amber Marks from GSD Rescue Indy, and adopted into the Ashley family on June 8, 2012, by Gary Ashley.
Niko’s favorite toy was a tennis ball. He was his dad’s shadow and loved being with Gary, whether that was a ride in the blue van or a walk to the mailbox.
Everyone loved Niko, and Niko loved everyone he met. Even people who were afraid of dogs found themselves cuddling with him on the couch. He was the perfect gentleman, quiet and well-mannered from the very beginning. His only fear was thunderstorms.
Niko was the family’s ambassador who always got along with other dogs. His companions and siblings over his lifetime include Radar, Ruger, and Raven (all surviving), along with those who preceded him in death, including Bella, Accalia, Trigger and Liesel, who crossed the bridge just two weeks before him at 17 years old.
Niko’s family was by his side to the end after spending 13 years caring for them as their best friend. He leaves behind a huge hole no other dog can fill and will be sorely missed in every day ahead.
