Nicole's obituary

Nicole Lynn Schoening, 51, passed away suddenly on June 21, 2024.

Born on August 22, 1972, in Omaha, Nebraska, Nicole was the third daughter of Lynn and Judy Schoening. Her childhood was filled with outdoor adventures with neighbors and summer days at the Keystone Pool. At the age of three, her family moved from Omaha to Waterloo, where her love for animals blossomed. She adored the barn cats and kittens, dogs, and especially her horses. Nicole and her sisters enjoyed riding with friends and participating in local barrel races.

In 1984, Nicole’s family relocated to the Brushy Bend Park neighborhood in Round Rock, Texas. There, she made many friends and cherished having horses in her backyard. After high school, Nicole joined “seeester” Tiffany in Oklahoma for college, where they both became enthusiastic Sooner fans, despite their parents' Cornhusker allegiance.

Nicole returned to Texas for her early professional career, excelling in roles at 3M and Wiley Electronics. Her adventurous spirit later led her to Chicago, Illinois, where she met her future husband, Chris Thies. Together, they were the “it” couple in the Chicago live music scene, forming lifelong friendships. In 2001, they welcomed their daughter, Dilynn Von Thies and Nicole loved being a mother and bonding with her perfect little girl. Following Dilynn’s birth and the events of 9/11, the family decided to leave Chicago. With Chris accepting a position at the iconic Backyard, they made Texas their home.

In 2004, Nicole and Chris married under the majestic oak tree at The Backyard. The following year, they welcomed their son, Oliver John Von Thies and their family was complete. Nicole found her calling in the real estate industry, building strong connections through her work in home warranties, title insurance, and surveying.

Nicole was preceded in death by her eldest sister, Lynette, who passed in 2019 from breast cancer, and her beloved father, Lynn Schoening (aka Old Geezer), in May 2024. She is survived by her children, Dilynn and Oliver Von Thies; her mother, Judy (Hughes) Schoening; her sister, Tiffany Stillwell; nephews Spencer Rabb, Hudson, Truman, and Wyatt Stillwell; and niece Madison Gurno. She also leaves behind her cherished pets: dogs Snoop and Jiggy, and cats Jopin and Yoda.
