To try and provide written word justice for the level of "old school cool" Nick was would be impossible but for everyone who knew him well, it just goes without saying. I don't have so much a story about him but more so a remembrance that I will carry with me about the level of person he was and how he treated me. There is a stereotypical story about how the relationship goes between Fathers of daughters and Son in Laws but I didn't experience that with him, he welcomed me into his family, and for about 7 years we shared interests like technology and good food. We talked parodically throughout the week about what new games were coming out, what new streaming service we were going to share and about what new piece of technology he was scheming to buy. If you went to Nick's on a Saturday, you had the best seat in the house, the coldest beer and lunch or dinner was already on the grill. From the outside you could see that he was full of life and for every minute he wasn't working he was having his own personal staycation on the porch and enjoying the outdoors. We pictured Nick and Deb retiring on whatever property we owned in the future, some place with the biggest fire pit we could muster to fit his needs. He was my friend and I will miss him.

There are actually a few memories that I'm very grateful to have with Nick from being one of the select few Derek's friends that got to taste his amazing cooking or even his homemade wine to helping him with the Hyundai or the Jeep when he needed an extra pair of hands. But the memory that will always come to mind and put a smile on my face is a little more embarrassing, a little more funny to whomever is reading this (hopefully) and just a little bit idiotic. One morning after a very long night of extracurricular activities with my buddy Derek we decided to go to his parents house when they lived in Longmont right behind where my folks lived. I'm not exactly sure why we went there but knowing Derek we were probably looking for some kind of food to help even us out. Being that it was still early and knowing that Nick would soon be leaving for work we didn't want to get scolded or made fun of for being a bit inebriated and otherwise not our usual calm, collected, and confident selves as many have grown accustomed to when seeing us ;) haha so we had the bright idea to go around the side of the house and hide behind the trashcans until his dad had left and was on his way to work. Thinking of course that we were very stealth like and silent (when in fact we probably sounded like giggling schoolgirls tripping over a drum set ) we took our positions and knelt behind the trash cans. No more than three minutes had gone by until we both see Nick 45 in hand and looking rather unpleasant... after a bit of not quite yelling about how stupid we were and how close we came to getting our heads taken off he told us both to go inside and reminded us that we were in fact idiots. It was the next day or the day following that I had come back to apologize yet again. And despite thinking I would get another well deserved ear full, it was more of the opposite reaction filled with a lot of sarcasm and humor. It seemed like he was never one to hold a grudge or be upset about something for too long but would not hesitate to remind you of something foolish in your past as not to forget the lesson learned. I'm a very lucky man to have friends like Derek and Heather (only two I've had the honor of meeting) and having grown up with them to see what incredible and just downright good people they've become because of the parenting from Nick and Debb. And for having another set of parents that always asked about and always showed me that parental love whenever I was around to visit. I love you all (and I very much miss you Deborah it's been too long since we`ve talked and joked and laughed at Derek while he is in another room <3 ) and want to say thank you for letting your sons little friend feel like he was apart of the Marino family. I amongst so many other will miss you Nick and would like to thank you again for putting up with Derek and I's shenanigans over all these years, and thank you for the reminder to not come between a man and what he loves because ya might have to embarrassingly ask your best friend if he can loan you a clean pair of shorts.... Bless y'all and I hope this story makes a few people smile and shook a few heads while picturing it....
