Nick and I were co-workers in the Purchasing Dept, at the Gas Company.   He always reminded me of the actor James Caan.  I remember his impressive  stained glass art, the greyhound named after him, and his pleasure when his Mom came in to the office bearing old country baked goods. Years later, Nick was excited to purchase a home on the river in La Pine.  He and Deb (whom I've known since the 1970s) had vacationed there and when it came up for sale, they bought it.  The seller  served as caretaker and lived in a small unit on the property, along with his dog Lucy.  Lucy took it upon herself to be greeter and playmate to all the guests.  She was often affectionately mentioned in the Guest Book.  What Deb didn't know was that Nick, after some convincing,  had arranged to include Lucy in the sales deal.  He knew Debbie had fallen in love with that dog and that, for Deb, the best part of going to La Pine was being with Lucy; and that without Lucy there, it wouldn't be the same for Debbie.   Nick's surprise for Debbie was an enduring  gift of love.   Now, how sweet was that?

We were so saddened to hear of Nick's passing.  Vance & I worked together with Nick at the Gas Company for many years.  Nick was in our wedding in 1981.  He had a great sense of humor for sure! I am sure he will be missed by many. May you rest in peace dear friend. Linda & Vance Klaus
I'm Elaine (daughter of Mary, who was Nick's father's sister.)There's "opinions" about the spelling, so I offer both:  The Dubravac/DuBravac tribe of sisters,  brothers and their parents was extremely close, with most ending up living in the Portland area. And, as Anita describes below, sometimes next door to each other. Once they began raising families, reproducing, almost in unison, there were cousins everywhere! It wasn't until I was older, that I realized how special it was to spend one's childhood summers and holidays with so many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Coming from my small family of only daughters, I was in turn intrigued and terrorized by the older, reeeally rowdy, fun-loving Dubs Boys, Nicky, Tommy and Jonny.  I won't name names, but one of the boys once beaned me with a hardball in a game of "hotbox." I went down. Hard. I think I was 7 or 8. They were 12-15. You didn't cry and a possible concussion didn't stop the game. I'm grateful for surviving childhood, for the warm memories, and especially for the friendships forged between our families and between generations.  Zivio, Nick!

I first met Nick in 1981 when Steve and I were roommates our freshman year at Oregon. I remember we let him in the side door of the gym so he could lift weights. I have a vague memory that he stayed in the dorm with us too. Is that correct Steve? If so he did it to save money to take us out for dinner at Old Town Pizza where he called me hollow leg for eating so much. I thought he was very generous. My name is also Nick and we had a good natured faux disagreement about which of us was “Little Nick”  “Who are you calling Little” etc. What a character. He had that racing dog named after him and wasn’t there a Gas Company video of him being thrown from the headquarters roof?  Those are the memories I will keep. I hope the family is doing ok. Hang in there  everyone.

Sad to hear of Nick's passing.  Condolences to the family.  Nick and I paired up as "The Brews Brothers" and produced some epic Gasco parties, two for Halloween, a New Year's Eve bash and a 50's dress up party.  They were the best parties I had and have ever been to.  Nick was a natural to team up with on those efforts with his warm personality and easy-going manner.  Always a pleasure to be around, a very significant trait as I'm sure all who knew him will agree.

Weenie roast with Gasco friends — with Nick and multiple Gasco co-workers
I am Anita DuBravac Dakers and my sister, Diane, and my brother Joe D grew up with Nick, Tom and Jon. We lived next door and saw "the boys" every day of our young lives.

I remember running through the corn rows in Grandpa DuB's garden with Nick. And the 6 of us once dug a fort in same garden and covered it with boards. It was so deep that we could stand up in it. We were proud of ourselves, but our parents were furious and made us cover it up. Undaunted, we built more forts. (Above ground). Blankets, boards, cardboard, big boxes, everything was fair game for our "projects." Nick and I were master architects!

I remember rollerskating on the concrete in Uncle Corkey's back yard with Nick. (The kind of skates that you clipped on to your shoes....and never stayed on).

We played cowboys and Indians and argued when someone we shot refused to "die."

We rode bicycles with playing cards pinned to the spokes. Such powerful engines in our race cars!

So many memories of growing up with Nick in a wonderful time when we had to be home by dark and were safe outside. We were only limited by our very rich imaginations. I love remembering these and many other adventures with my dear cousin, Nick, and look forward to our sweet reunion in heaven.

Very sorry for the loss of Nick.  I worked with him at NW Natural many years and loved his sense of humor.   I tried to be a runner and he joked about how I was prone to injury.  I recall him being so nice to talk with.   Very sorry for your loss Debbie!

Dad, Tommy & Gary just ha…

Dad, Tommy & Gary just hanging out at Joan & Gary’s

Hey there, Nick,

This is your cousin Nan [“Nanny Boyien”, as Auntie Anne used to say]. In the last few years, I’ve thought that since I was the oldest of the remaining, living Dub/Bowen cousins, I would be the next to go. What happened?

I strongly suspect that sometime soon, if you see someone RUNNING to meet you - - it will be me, your NV cousin who loved to run around a lot - - with all the kin in Portland and in the Nevada mountains in the summers - - and even down a runway in Atlantic City, representing good ‘ole Nevada!

All that was before a bony spur was growing in my upper spine and almost paralyzed me from the neck down. Thankfully, I was spared from that, but I’ve had problems walking in later years that have slowed me down and kept me from doing all I would have liked to do.

So you should know, even now, how deeply I cherish many memories of being with you and all the other awesomely talented, humorous, and fun-loving, attractive Croatian kin, in NV and OR! I fondly recall those summers when Uncle Joe, Auntie Rose, and Anita would sing and play the guitar while we all would eat, drink, laugh, and chatter in the big back yard joining the two houses. What wonderful times and memories my family, yours, and many others have had over the years!

Now I look forward to joining you and all the rest of our beloved kin for even bigger, happier “parties” beyond! Zivio!

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of my cousins in Portland! I remember when my sister Mary and I came up for a visit and stayed two weeks. We had a lot of fun with Steve, Tom, Sydney, and Nicole and also getting to see Auntie Rose, Uncle Nic, and Uncle Tom.  Rest in peace cousin Nick as you will be missed!❤️❤️❤️❤️

I’m Dan Papez, Nick’s cousin. I grew up in McGill, Nevada and presently live in Ely. My dad, Louis Papez, affectionately called “Uncle Lou” by the DuBravac boys, was their maternal uncle.  Our family loved when the DuBravac family came to McGill for a visit.  Their visits were filled with laughter, good food, and  Uncle Lou dishing out loads of tease on Nick and his brothers.  A special memory was the time when I was attending college in Reno and Nick drove down from Portland, picked me up and we drove to McGill to go deer hunting with Uncle Lou.   During the hunt Nick and I were both grousing to my dad about not seeing any deer. He told us to be patient but we kept the chatter going. Not five minutes later a very large buck ran across the road right in front of us.  Of course by the time we stopped and jumped out of the truck the buck was gone.  Nick and I both caught some crap from my dad about too much talk and not enough looking.  A ton of laughter ensued.

Memories in life are priceless and my memories of Nick and his family visits to McGill always bring a smile.

Pocivaj u miru.  (Rest in Peace).
