Nicholas Eugene "Butch" McKay passed away in his sleep on January 30, 2026 at his home in Panama City Beach, Florida, in the care of family.

Butch is remembered for his warmth, unwavering compassion, and his enveloping Southern charm. He is championed as a tireless advocate for people living with HIV/AIDS, a pioneering force in prevention, treatment and care work, and a tenacious devotee to the fight for human rights.

In his final letter to the family, Butch was adamant that his passing be cause for celebration, that our tribute focus on festivity, shared laughter, and storytelling. You have already taken up the mantle, and from our hearts to yours, we thank you. We look forward to sharing more and seeing many of you at Butch’s celebration of life. It is Butch’s wish and our hope to be able to livestream it for those of you who will not be able to physically attend. We have set up this online memorial for those who which to contribute memories now, and we will post details of the forthcoming festivity when we are able.
