Nicholas's obituary
Nicholas Joseph (Nicky) Britton (b. September 11, 1956) died on November 26, 2022, at the University of Chicago Hospitals after a severe experience of advanced pulmonary cardiac disease.
Nick was a beloved member of the University of Chicago's Student Housing community, where he worked for twenty years as part of the dormitory support staff.
Nick was born in Hyde Park Chicago and lived in the area his entire life. He was an avid golfer, frequenting the Jackson Park course with a circle of the Hyde Park "regulars. " He also enjoyed fishing in Jackson Park lagoon.
Nick was a graduate of St. Thomas The Apostle school, as were his brothers and sister.
Nick derived much joy in life through the positive and supportive relationships he fomented with UC students. He was a regular at the Cove where he would often stop for a beer after work and shoot the breeze with friends, many of whom stretched back to childhood .
Nick was a fighter. He faced many health challenges in life. He first sustained tremendous injuries to his leg in a car accident and, a few years later, he was diagnosed with a progressive autoimmune rheumatic disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, which eventually fused his vertebrae. Despite his challenges, Nick worked hard, insisted on doing those things he could do, and never complaining about the cards he'd been dealt.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Paul Christopher and John Michael, his father Paul Kendall Britton and his mother Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Britton. He is survived by his sister, Mary Britton, brother in law, Chris Karczmar and his niece and nephew, Naima Karczmar Britton of Berkeley CA and Malachi Karczmar Britton of Chicago.
A Memorial Service for Nicky is in the works, and will be announced in the Hyde Park Herald and on this site.
