Tom (Tommy) Hawkins, 75, of Long Beach, CA, passed away on November 22, 2023, in Tennessee. Born on July 19, 1948, in Long Beach, Tom was a beloved father, grandfather, uncle, brother and a friend to many.
Tom, also known as Neville Thomas Hawkins Jr., was a tough, funny, and compassionate man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. At family gatherings, he would always assist the ladies in the kitchen by taste testing all their food with a big smile on his face. He had a strong sense of duty and honor, which led him to serve in the United States Army after graduating from Long Beach Polly High School.
After completing his time in the Army, Tom continued his education and played football at Long Beach City College and the University of Cal Berkeley. He was an All-American linebacker and still holds the record for the most single season unassisted tackles at Long Beach City College.
Tom enjoyed a variety of hobbies. He was an avid football fan, both as a spectator and a participant. He also found solace in weight lifting, which allowed him to maintain his physical strength and the ocean was where he found peace. Most importantly, Tom cherished spending quality time with his family, creating lasting memories and strengthening their bonds.
Tom is survived by his sister Rose Marie Jacobs, his daughters Rachel, Megan, Michelle, and Kelly, his sons Shane and Tyler. He is also survived by his son-in-laws Oscar and Nate, his daughter-in-law, Courtney, and his grandchildren Ethan, Haley, Noah, Karly, Mason, Liam, Miah, Wrinly, Jolie. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Madeline Medeiros, his father, Neville Thomas Hawkins Sr., and his brother Caleb Thomas Hawkins.
A ceremony to honor Tom’s life will take place at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach, CA. The details of the service will be shared with family and close friends.
Tom Hawkins will be remembered as a soldier, an athlete, a loving father, a loving grandfather and a loyal friend. His impact on the lives he touched will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
