Neil's obituary

Neil Gregory Dunbar

February 19, 1991 – August 16, 2023

We are heartbroken to announce the sudden death of Neil Gregory Dunbar on August 16, 2023, at the age of 32. His loss leaves an empty space that will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

Born in New Glasgow, Neil was the youngest son of Murray and Carole Dunbar. Beloved son, brother, and friend, Neil’s love for family, friends, and helping others defined him and he often prioritized care for others before himself. He championed the underdog, and his desire to ease the world's pain led him to extend a helping hand or offer solace and support when he could. His love of the outdoors was evident in his passion to explore and connect with nature from an early age. His gaming prowess demonstrated his talent for strategy and boundless imagination.

Neil was determined to make his own way which encouraged his move to Ontario near lifelong friends, Josh and Matt. His enthusiasm for food and the hard but rewarding work in hospitality allowed him to develop skills and a network of friends in the restaurant industry. He recently began to learn a trade that would take him to the top of Toronto’s skyline.

A loving uncle, affectionately dubbed "Uncle Oatmeal," Neil’s playful nature was endearing to his nieces and nephews.

Neil is survived by his parents Murray and Carole; siblings Catherine (Julia) Brown, Garren (Sarah Potter) Dunbar, and Elizabeth (Peter) LaPier; paternal grandmother Alberta (Dahr) Dunbar; nephews Colin Jr., Emmett, and Sebastian, nieces Brianna Echo, Ryleigh, Adyn, Olivia, and Birdie as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be missed by sister-in-law Crystal Talbot. Neil was predeceased by his brother Colin; maternal grandparents, Frank and Muriel MacDougall; paternal grandfather Clarence (Pat) Dunbar.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, August 29th, at 4:00 pm at Glasgow Square Theatre, New Glasgow, officiated by Deacon Art Mitchell, followed by a reception at the Monarch Marina. Cremation has occurred and a private family burial will be held in the future.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests an act of kindness in Neil’s honour or a contribution to a charity of your choice in his memory.
