Nat Battersby (1936 – 2023)
With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Nat Battersby on Sept 8th 2023. Survived by his wife of 63 years Helen, son Paul, daughter Natalie Brault, grandson Raymond Brault, granddaughter Lynne Brault, sister Lola Brooks, many nieces and nephews and Kolopack and Kragelj family in-laws.
In 1953, at the age of 17 years, Nat Battersby joined the RCAF Training Command Band in Toronto as a french horn player. In 1964 he transferred to the Central Band of the Armed Forces in Ottawa. He retired from the Armed Forces band in Aug of 1978.
He was a member of the Ottawa Hull Musicians Union board and later became president.
Throughout his career and after leaving the Armed Forces band, he played with the Ottawa Symphony, Nepean Symphony, played for Orpheus shows and taught at the Ottawa University. He also played with the National Art Centre orchestra for many years and played his final concert with them at Carnegie Hall on Nov 15th 1992.
Then fully retired, Nat and his wife Helen spent their winters in Florida at the Raintee R.V. park for 17 seasons where Nat produced and directed the annual Raintree show and Xmas show while also conducting the choir. Fun was had by all.
After being diagnosed in 2018, he endured Parkinsons’s for 5 years until he contracted Covid in 2023. Weakened by both his Parkinson’s and Covid, he passed away 9 days after entering the hospital, surrounded by family as he took his last breath.
