Myralon's obituary
Myralon Joyce Simmons
Myralon Joyce Simmons, 77, of Woodbridge, VA, passed away on October 8, 2025.
Myralon was born in Newbern, NC, to Robert Lawrence Sanders and Julia Mae Sanders on December 17, 1947. She graduated from Johnston County Central High School in Smithfield, NC, and married Col. Retired Joseph Jacob Simmons IV on January 12, 1974, in Washington, DC. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland, and her Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management from National Louis University in Chicago, IL, a testament to her strong academic focus and intellect. Myralon worked as a Multi-Media Specialist in the Visual Information Services Branch, Strategic Planning and Information Directorate, for the Defense Information Systems Agency, and started her federal service work in 1970 until she retired in 2013.
As a military spouse for over 30 years, Myralon was a beacon of dedication. She assumed numerous roles in her personal and professional life, from being a loving spouse and mother to serving as the military family support coordinator during four overseas assignments (12 years) as well as during her husband’s command of the White House Communications Agency (4 years). She also took on several military leadership roles, including serving as President of the 3rd Infantry Division Military Wives German/American Club (1989 - 1991), Manager of the Leighton Barracks Thrift Shop (3 years), and Unit Morale, Welfare and Recreation Outreach Program Representative. Her selfless commitment to the well-being of others and her willingness to share ideas and resources within the military communities in which she resided, resulted in her receiving the United States Army Europe’s highest community service designation, the Soaring Eagle Award.
Myralon is preceded in death by her parents, Robert L. Sanders and Julia M. Sanders, sisters Deanna D. Sanders and Veronica Sanders, and brother Gerronnie Sanders.
Myralon is survived by her husband, Col. (Retired) Joseph J. Simmons IV, sons Jacob Simmons and Jonathan Simmons, and granddaughter Noelle J. Simmons.
A memorial service will be held for her on November 22, 2025, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, Washington, DC at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow in the lower level.
Memorials in her honor may be given to St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, Washington, DC which supports the Capitol Area Food Bank free food distribution and the KAIROS prison ministry among many other programs; or the Rodham Institute of Georgetown University, which aims to increase the number of under-represented minorities in health care professions, and improve health outcomes for underserved populations (donation links are available on the Memorial Gifts page).
The Simmons family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to Monsignor Raymond G. East at St. Teresa of Avila and his kind staff and volunteers for their unwavering support during this difficult time.
