My's obituary
My Nguyen (Myviet Thi Nguyen) died from a rare form of lymphoma early Friday morning, August 11, 2023, in Oakland, CA.
My was 48 years old. She was born in Guam as her refugee family was on their way from Vietnam to the United States and grew up in the South Bay in Northern California, one of nine siblings.
She attended Santa Clara University to study computer engineering and worked as a software engineer, making her own way in a male-dominated industry.
As a community, we are heartbroken by her sudden death. She had only been diagnosed with cancer two months ago.
My brought a positive outlook and bright energy to everything she pursued. She volunteered for many causes, serving as the technology director for Hyphen magazine and contributing to other efforts in the Asian American community. She tutored at the Tenderloin Technology Lab in San Francisco and was an advisor to Girls in Tech Vietnam and the Social Changemakers Network. She raised funds supporting breast cancer research and the Lupus Foundation of Northern California. My herself had lupus.
My was also a foodie who loved nothing better than sharing a good meal with friends, of which she had so many from the San Francisco Bay Area to across the world in Vietnam. She had excellent tastes, a good dose of sass, and a big heart.
My is survived by her mother, her siblings and their families, and her partner Benson.
My was loved by all of us who knew her. We miss her so much.
