Murl's obituary
3, 2019. Murl was born on September 22, 1927 in Mount Vernon, TX to Augusta A. and Iva Mae
(Armstrong) Mattingly. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1946 and became a
Corporal while serving at Camp Pendleton and Camp Elliot in San Diego. After his military
service, he attended Texas A&M University, where he studied petroleum engineering. After his
studies, he began working in the oilfield as a surveyor in 1952.
While working in Wyoming, he met Mary Jane Rochford, and they married on December 19,
1953 in Kemmerer, Wyoming. Jane and Murl had two daughters, Glenna and Patricia.
In 1955 Murl became a mud engineer for Baroid Corp. The family moved to London in 1966,
where his role shifted to sales and management. This career took Murl and his family all over
the world, including Beirut Lebanon, Perth Australia, and Singapore. Finally, in 1980 they
returned to Houston, TX, where he later retired after 37 years.
He was preceded in death by his five brothers, Virgil H., Raymond E., Norman A., Thomas B.,
and Bertram Mattingly, as well as his one sister, Mary Frances (Mattingly) Lamb.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Mary Jane, and his daughters and their families:
Glenna Jo Lipp and her husband Peter of Meadows Place, TX; Patricia Davis and her husband
Derek of Houston, TX; five grandchildren: Shannon Davis, Kameron Davis and Dillon Davis, all
of Houston, TX; Genevieve Lipp of Durham, NC; Christopher Lipp of Damon, TX; and two great-
grandchildren: Caden Gomez and Amira Davis.
He was greatly loved and will be missed by all his friends and family. A memorial service will be
held on Saturday, May 25 at the First Baptist Church of Cross Roads Texas, 14232 FM 59,
Athens, TX 75751 with a visitation and lunch at 11:30 am and service at 1:00 pm.
